Please someone, thank me for this post. I'm a bit unnerved at having 666 up there. Not that I'm superstitious of course!Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0

I'm not even sure what distance I run, only that it takes about 15 minutes and I don't do it very fast. So I want to run further, although at this stage I'm not worried about faster.
The very first thing you should be doing imho is getting yourself over to mapmyrun.com and plotting the runs you do (can also keep a record of them in a "training log" thing) - knowing how far you're running is quite fundamental in measuring your progress. At least when you know how far you're going, you can talk about pace in meaningful terms...0 -
Well it sounds like the first thing to do is build your run gradually up to 5km, which is about 40 mins slow running (though it's hard to tell how slow "slow" is!). You'd do hard, easy, hard, easy, though I'm sure Rich can draw up a decent plan for you, starting at about 1.5-2K I guess.
I have the same problem as many on here, that it's difficult to get out for a run because of family commitments. In particular, my son doesn't like me being out during the evening (he has aspergers syndrome, so changes to routine are difficult for him).
But I NEED to do this - and if I start now, it will be easier in a couple of years, when I will have time during school hours etc (I work strange hours, so am often at home through the day)."I wasn't wrong, I just wasn't right enough.":smileyhea97800072589250 -
I feel completely out of my depth...really need to get to grips with all this info you're giving us Rich.
Its not going anywhere.
It will be better when it can be organised on our own website but the search facility works pretty well on here as well.
Its better to have too much info than not enough though - use it as and when it is relevant.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Good for you. Loads of mums on here doing what they can run-wise, which I repeatedly tip my hat to (and to you to). Good advice from Idio, go to mapmyrun.co.uk to measure how far you're running now and then later to plan other running routes.Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0 -
Thanks again for the info Rich. I'll certainly be covering marathon distance in training, but do you think I should also do a marathon (race) in preparation? And generally speaking, how many races should I do at the various distances before London 2010?
No you won't!
Covering marathon distance in training is counter-productive. The damage is of a different magnitude to other distances so best avoided. 20 miles is sufficient, 22 at a push - it is the only distance where 'over distance' work isn't really done.
You train 'over time' so that your body is used to 'time on the feet' but this is done in a very easy 20 miler (probably 4-6 times before the race, ideally with one as a 20 mile race).
The number of races is best kept quite low but it would be advisable to have, say, 6 half marathons under your belt before going the full distance - at the end of the day you are looking to run two of these back to back!!).Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Rich,
Great to see such ambitious plans put down on here. I am in awe!
Can you answer a few stupid questions for me please, related to the pulse information. What is RP (resting pulse?) How do you relate working pulse taken at the end of a training run to an anticipated 10K time? I am fascinated. I knew that if you were unwell your heart rate monitor would indicate this by showing your heart rate slightly higher than normal. By the way, is pulse the same as hear rate?
Sorry if this has been explained earlier, I am a newcomer to this thread (but becoming rapidly assimilated! )
Thanks
Hi Chickadee,
A bit of a summary on resting pulses can be found in post 3655 which should answer some of your questions.
In terms of relating to 10k times, its all about getting to know your own body. 10K races and interval sessions are often carried out in the 160-170 range. Over time you get to know your own trade off between pulse rates and running pace. Not at all complicated - just analysis of data.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Hi all :j
Thanks ROD - I must say I did consider throwing water over myself, in fact I did actually begin to execute said plan but just stopped myself. I just couldn't!!! I'm a lady don't you know lol!
Sally - thanks, I'm glad I am not the only one who actually finds it quite amusing. Clearly not at the time but now it's amusing!!! In hindsight (and my recommendation for anyone in a similar boat) wait for the loos even if you miss the start.
In terms of goals, I will beat my last PB over 10K which was 54:59. Not sure when as there aren't many 10Ks left round here this year. I'm away the weekend of the Cardiff one so hmph. Anyhow as soon as I find a race I will let you know.
I'm doing a 5KM 'Big Fun Run' this Sunday not sure how jammed it's going to be and what the pb potential is for it but am hoping to beat 26 minutes.
ROD - any tips on training for this week with a 5KM 'fast as my little legs will carry me' on Sunday. Bear in mind that I have a boozy night out (birthday party) planned on Saturday night eeekkk....0 -
