  • Hi all, my we have been busy I've got loads of catching up to do :D Hello to the newbies.

After my runs on Monday and Tuesday night I stayed in last night. My legs were ok and not sore but just a bit 'heavy' (well, heavier than usual, lol). I went out again tonight for a little run and its definitely getting slightly easier already (remember I'm starting from nothing here folks!). So still baby steps but at least I've not jacked it in already. I'm aiming to do a 5k run in December, hopefully non-stop and not coming last!

I'm a mum too and (DS aged 3) and I work full time so finding the time fit everything in is a bit of a challenge. I may have to go out in the morning  - but I'm not a morning person!!

  • After incessant nagging from Sally (:p) it is probably time to move this club idea another step forward. So how do you form a club?

A group of individuals coming together to carry out a mutual activity, in common language a club. The group usually draws up a set of rules to regulate the relationship between the members and will usually provide for a committee to run the club’s affairs. An unincorporated association is the most common structure for sports clubs as it is the simplest and most informal way to establish an organisation. Put simply, any sports group or club which is not a company is an unincorporated association, whether its members are aware of it or not!

So a group of people coming together to carry out a mutual activity is a club. Well we've done that. Easy peasy - job done. We now have a club, well done everyone!

However, although not strictly necessary, it is normal to have rules in at least a basic form. Considering some of the rabble we have in our ranks I think it is probably best to have one or two rules to keep some order. :p

But who makes the rules? Well, thats down to a committee - so we best get one of those sorted out first. Fortunately, this process has already begun with some nominations already flagged up. As there is no rush I propose the following timetable:

    By Fri 26th Sept 15:00
All nominations to be received (Self nominated and others) plus suggestions for any roles not already mentioned. Nominations will also be required for Club Name at this stage. Also brief descriptions (bullet points only) of each role by this point.

    By Weds 1st Oct 15:00
Committee members to be selected by default (if one nomination) or vote (if multiple nominations).

    By Mon 6th Oct 15:00
Each committee member suggests rules relating to their role.

    By Fri 10th Oct 15:00
Committee amends/agrees basic rules of club.

At this point we will have a committee and some rules. Well, it's a start!

    Afilliation:
So thats a club sorted. We then need to proceed towards becoming a AAA Afilliated club. Again, I would suggest no rush and we look to do this maybe in the new year.

    1. Worst case scenario - As a starting point lets assume no external funding. On this basis we would need 25 members to commit to paying £7pa (not to be paid until the new year). £7 equals £5 individual AAA afilliation plus (25x£2) for AAA club afilliation. As already mentioned, this £7 is not really a cost because everyone will pay lower entry fees for all races subsequently entered, usually £2 per race saving. So in fact by paying £7 anyone who does at least 4 races per year will save money.

    2. Trickle Revenue - As runners we all buy running things. We try to buy them at lowest cost and we try to make sure we're buying the right products by picking other's brains for their experiences of the products. As this is all happening anyway, I suggest we set up a site (a freebie lens or something like that) to slap afilliate links on. So that the afilliate companies can see it is a relevant site all that is needed is to copy and paste a few tips and technique articles over from this thread.

At the end of the day it wont be for public consumption just a point to channel all club purchases through and try to get a couple of quid into club funds for each pair of Sorbothane sold or £5 for a pair of running shoes. Everyone can contribute to these afilliate links when they find something they like and we can get a link set up. We'll then keep a list of what each afilliate pays and choose our purchases accordingly. Funnel other runners you know through the links as well and we do even better.

It is entirely possible to get enough revenue generated before afilliation to cover the £7 per member costs thus making membership free. Ideally, funds for club vests could also be generated in this way.

    3. External Funding
This is a much bigger and long winded process and is full of ifs and buts, but we need an up-and-running functioning club before any credible bids can be put forward. Generally speaking, persistence and correctly worded bids do get a result sooner or later but this will be on a back burner just for now.

:p To you too....but thank you and thank you again for being so organised. I will get on to my nominations. Is it best to PM you (presuming that you have nominated yourself to organise/sort results) or put them up on the forum?

Please again if you need me to do anything to help just ask.

I think it best to put nominations on the forum - its all nice and transparent then. I want to see loads of nominations so we can have some silly hustings :p.

Yes, I'm quite happy to keep it all recorded through the main club listing post and I'll put the timetable on there as well.

So the first emphasis is getting people nominated for roles.......

Ok I am trying to be organised and do this now before it gets to next friday and Ive forgotten!

    Positions To Be Filled:
Treasurer I think Luc would be really good in this role
    Secretary (Membership) Maz
Secretary (Fixtures) Sally (yes Im nominating myself!)
    Secretary (Social) Becky
    Secretary (Records) HWGA
    Coach Rich

Think we should probably also have a Chairperson?? This should really be you, but not sure you would a) like to do this B) be allowed to do 2 roles although coach probably isn't a committe position and therefore you could be both?
