  • Evening all :D

Thanks for the fab welcome and I'm impressed that none of you laughed at my 2010 marathon dreams, lol. I went out for a little run again tonight. According to mapmyrun.com we did 2.7 miles of 3 minute run/walks. I have no idea of what I should be doing but my friend suggested that so I just went with the flow. I'll have a rest day tomorrow cos my DP is at yoga and I'll need to stay in with DS.

*Stupid newbie question alert* My running kit consists of loose fit jogging type trousers (too long and drag on the road/mud etc), Nike trainers (bought years ago for aerobics), long sleeved cotton t-shirt and Ron Hill thin waterproof style jacket thing (technical term, obviously :o ). What should I be wearing? Is this OK to start off in? I don't think I ready for anything above the knee just yet! But being MSE I don't want to rush out and waste a load of money on stuff I don't need yet.

And, any suggestions for some online training plans I can nick? Looking at just improving general fitness, possibly aiming towards a 5k or even a 10.
Cos I don't shine if you don't shine.
  • That sounds fine to start with Molly, as long as you're comfy. You might want to invest in some new trainers once you get into it - or some insoles to start with if your current ones aren't comfy, and make sure you have a decent sports bra (sorry, but we haven't had any boob talk for at least a few hours!).

And well done for getting out there tonight :)

  • hey guys. I dont actually run, in fact ive always hated running! However! I have been dreaming a lot about taking up running (literal dreams not metaphorical ones). Now I have a park near by and i guess stuff i can use to run in the form of trackies, t-shirts and trainers... however, how they heck do i start? I dont expect to be able to just go out and run because im not exactly the fittest person (currently trying to lose 2st), although i do walk a fair bit and do Davina DVDs lol. So how should i start this out (gosh i feel daft saying that but i honestly dont think its a daft question lol)? Do i run, walk a bit, run, walk a bit? Jog? not a clue. How long should i be aiming to be out for to start with etc?

    Thanks guys :)

Hi and welcome to the thread. I only just joined yesterday and I'm a total beginner so hopefully we'll keep each other company. :D

    Hi again Molly,

London 2010 is a long way off yet so we'll forget about that for now.

The first target as you say should be a 5k continuous run. This can take as long as it takes. All the rubbish that I spout will be based on preventing injuries and will go against a lot of the training plans you see in magazines.

To get to this first goal the principles to follow are the same as those in the 06:22 post to MissEmmyLou. Measure out a 5k route, which you pretty much already have. To conquer the distance successive attempts at it should be Walk, Walk, Run, Walk, Walk, Run etc.

This should be maintained for at least 2 weeks. On the run days you are just looking to run as far into the course as you feel comfortable and then walking the rest. The stop start methods that involve running, then walking, then running again are storing up problems in terms of torn muscle fibres.

Once that has been maintained for at least two weeks we can then look at running more of the sessions and thinking about easing the distance up. But one step at a time.

As for the clothing, make do with whatever you've got - its not a fashion parade. :p

PS Don't worry about being a Newbie, Molly. The vast majority of us have only been around a couple of weeks or so - I think we must just bond quickly! lol

If I got new trainers where would be the best place to get them? There's a triathalon shop locally, otherwise it's a 100 mile round trip to Swansea. Do I have to find specialist shops? What about best brands? Budget? Cheap as preferably ;):D

I've got the sports bra so no boobie problems here. :rotfl:

I haven't done this yet but it's highly recommended to go to a specialist running shop and get an assessment done so you know what shoes are right for you. You can always buy them elsewhere afterwards - have a look online etc. Lot of people seem to like New Balance shoes, and I've noticed you can quite often get them in TK Maxx for a reasonable price ;)

Am glad to hear your boobies are OK :rotfl:

  • Molly,

Since you want to keep the cost down for new shoes you might like to see my post 2370 on pg 119.

I'm not saying its right - just what I've always done. :p
