We used to use lion dung (can buy it from garden centres) to stop our cats pooing on our vegetable plot when we had one and it worked.

I have heard of that but some say it doesn't work, so I was looking at the cheaper options first.

I think I will have to see how I get on with these prickly cuttings next week.

Well, the prickly cuttings didn't work, the swine has been side stepping them.

However, I have tried something and we haven't had any visits at all (touch wood) since I put it in the garden.

I made a cat scarer, like the ones in Argos which are £15 for 3.

Didn't want to pay that much in case they didn't work.

I had a cheap black stacking crate (value range from Tesco) and I cut out one of the sides in the shape of a cat.

Heated a metal skewer over a tea light flame and melted holes in it for eyes, then slotted a couple of marbles in the holes.

I had to put some sellotape on the back to hold the marbles in position as they kept falling out.

Got a couple of small metal tent pegs, the ones that you get with plastic greenhouses, taped a couple onto the legs with black PVC tape and pushed them into the ground to make it stable.

    Voila!

A cheap cat scarer that seems to be working.

The only thing is, when I go to pull the car up the drive I catch a glimpse and keep thinking there is an actual cat in the garden!

I'm surprised no-one has referenced this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIbkLjjlMV8

Anyway, I shall continue to watch this thread with interest...

Forget the solar powered deterrent devices - they don't work. Two enormous mounds of cat poo within a couple of hours of activating the device. I think I will send it back to Amazon.

Cats dump in familiar places with familiar smells which is why it/they keep on visiting your garden.

I suggest you get a cat litter tray. Dig a shallow hole in the area that they frequent and put the tray in so that it's not sticking up out of the ground. That way it won't look an eyesore. Fill it up with dirt or cat litter if you're feeling flush. When the cats have done their business lift it up and sling the contents in the bin.

Alternatively fill a cat litter tray up with dirt from their business place and put it out on the path or somewhere unobtrusive.

You can get a medium size one from Wilkinsons for £1.75 and they're available in various colours. Like this one:

Thanks for your reply but is anyone else with the same problem thinking "Sod that!".

They were going in the middle of my garden which at the minute looks a bit bare until the shrubs grow. I have weed suppressant down so don't want to be digging large holes plus I certainly don't want to have a cat litter tray bang in the middle of the garden (nowhere to hide it), plus I don't have soil to fill it and am not buying cat litter and am certainly not going out to empty the thing every day.

Isn't this going to encourage them? You are giving them an open invite into your garden aren't you?

'Arthur' seems to be doing his job standing guard at the minute so I would def rec people having a go at making a cat to stick in ther

Arthur may be working because he is new.

As you have demonstrated already, cats aren't stupid, so lets see how long Arthur continues to perform.

Besides, if he proves a huge success, you'll have cracked it. The next step would be 'Dragon's Den' and a hugely successful business....

....until the Chinese copy him, that is. :D

I have copied him, he is like the ones in Argos or Coopers of Stortford.

Arthur looks like the one on the left. :D

You are right, they aren't daft so I am not holding my breath, but 5 days without cat c*rap is better than removing it every single morning. :D

I have caught site of the cat (he lives across the road), sitting in their drive looking across at Arthur as I have positioned him near end of ours, I don't think he knows what to make of him!

Every 'clean' day is a notch on my chart and not the cats!

Please don't use mothballs. They are highly toxic to cats and can cause a long painful death.
