    Thanks a lot again.

Unfortunately she failed her first test so got to pay for another one now.

But perhaps an idea for someone else.

I didn't pass first time either, but the control job may be good for her :)

I don't know what their bonus scheme is, but I know it's pretty good.

not any more as decided to go solo rather than working for someone else so will be paying very low taxes.. on a much higher income.

I'm wondering whether it comes down to this. Not liking to be told what to do if doesn't agree with it and sharing this attitude with daughter.

You come across as supporting your daughter to defy what she has been told to do by coming up with excuses just because YOU think what they are asking of her is stupid and not in her best interest....AND????

Every day people are being told to do things by their boss that makes no sense to them at all and incur more work or stress doing so? Annoying, frustrating, but...it is life. If you want something from someone, you do what they tell you to do. Clearly you had an issue with it yourself and decided to look at another route. That's great and clearly worked for you, but your daughter is young, and before she can start doing what she wants when she wants and still earn an income from it, she's going to learn that doing what you are told and getting on with it is the way to getting the income she needs.

You are doing her no favour at all by teaching her that she would defy this common sense fact. Tell her to get on with it and make the best of it. If anything, that additional demand will only be an incentive for her to look even quicker for a job.

Personally our dog walk is more than three miles each way and we do that a couple of times a week

You walk your dog only twice a week? Poor mutt! That can't be good for its bladder.

gettingready: I have to say that if with your daughter having been asked for money/fags on her way to the JCP, I can understand your concerns for her safety.

I have to ask, were her tears due to being asked for money/fags or due to the way she was spoken to by JCP staff, if it was the latter then she needs to complain. In my experience of periods of unemployment, I've found staff attitudes to vary greatly, Broad Street in Birmingham was hated, Skegness and Swaffham were pretty good. The best was in Omagh but I lived in the town so long that staff got to know me and one member of staff in particular was fantastic, before we left my husband & I talked about trying to get how good she is recognised somehow. After we moved to Norfolk, JCP staff at the JCP my husband went to was pretty good.

Regarding the charges for prescriptions & dental costs, she needs to apply for help with these through the Help with Health Costs Low Income Scheme: http://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/1125.aspx. As your Duaghter is over 18, the amount of help she's entitled to will be based on her income alone.

With having run her own business for 2 years, she's got a lot of skills which could be used in a wide variety of jobs. I think the suggestion of controller with the taxi co is a good one, might not be what she wants to do long term but it's easier to get a job if you're already employed.

I hope your daughter finds a job soon.

  • There is nothing but retail/catering/carers jobs in east London, all paying NMW so we are not even looking here as this is not where she wants to be.

She got some unique skills/experience that with the right company can take her places.
    QUOTE]

When I was made unemployed I didn't want to be a barman / valet parker / self stacker, But I did them. It's easier to find work in work.

Your daughters slef worth appears to be her downfall.

You say she has unique skills etc, but from the outside looking in, she appears lazy, unmotivated, somewhat precious and not willing to stretch her self in any way to seek employment.

Her relucatance to do the basics to sign on, is indicitive of an individual who expects the moon on a stick, to be place in her palm.

But to be fair, with some of the comments you have made, I may know where she gets it from!

CKhalvashi - thanks for your post and well done to you and your OH.

Yes, system is badly designed. It should be better thought off to help people rather than put them off and depress them even more.

Yes, there are a lot of U25's that have never done anything with their lives so far and perhaps those need a bit of a push/direction but again, in a positive/encouraging way.

There are also a lot of under 25's who have done a lot already, have the skills/experience etc who are unemployed professionals and not professionally unemployed.

There is nothing but retail/catering/carers jobs in east London, all paying NMW so we are not even looking here as this is not where she wants to be.

Just doing some research into this - in the meantime, ticking boxes for the JC.

I was an unemployed professional and that's why I was moved to fortnightly appointments. I've worked since I was 13, had an up to date CV and showed evidence of cover letters I'd already written. I also kept a comprehensive spreadsheet of jobs I'd applied for (I was looking before I signed on) and I took a print out of this to my first interview. My adviser said because I was looking in a specific sector (that I'd studied a degree in) and was already very proactive I didn't need to come weekly despite being under 25. If your daughter has evidence like that they may be more lenient with her as she's already doing their job. She'll probably still have to go to the special under 25 centre though. We don't have one here to my knowledge.

Cate1976 - I can't walk down the high street or even just to the corner shop where I live without beggars asking for money or cigarettes, any time of day or night. When I used to work and catch a bus they used to sometimes shout things at me like "OI OI SEXY" or "I'D GIVE YOU A GOOD SEEING TO"....at 8 in the morning while I was waiting for the bus. It's very common in deprived areas of cities I think. I don't feel threatened particularly by it, its just words.

It is one thing to take a job in Miami, one thing to go into prisons because one wants to - quite another having to venture into area one would happily never see in his/life because someone decided this is a good idea to put an U25 Job Centre there.

Where should they have put it? It makes sense to me that it is in a regeneration area. Think of the voters complaining if they had put it in the "nice" area. Also for the under 25s who attend daily it will cost less to reimburse the few for travel rather than the many.

As for doing things we don't want to or would choose not to, that is normal.

Apron stings? Nope. Common sense. My daughter was living/working over 500 miles away for 2 years before coming back home recently. She had 3 jobs while there as well as run her own little business which unfortunately did not work out. So spare me the apron strings please.

Then I am even more confused at why an adult would break down in tears at having to get 3 buses in to a rough area once a week. Could she have another problem you are not aware of? It just seems an extreme reaction for an independent woman.

Re my council flat - I had my council flat for like 15 years or so now and what does it mater? I pay my rent, I pay all my bills. I work. End of.

Re higher taxes - not any more as decided to go solo rather than working for someone else so will be paying very low taxes.. on a much higher income.

Yes, there is life outside benefits system if one wants it.

My daughter will not be on JSA for long, that is for sure.

But she will not be applying for any crap NMW job - as hers is contribution based, the first few months she does not have to apply for every crap job there is. She can limit her searches to her education/background/previous work experience/salary.

    Thanks for all the posts.
Any job is a job when you are unemployed, stats say you are far more likely to be employed if already in paid employment.
I guess it is how you view things, work a NMW role for a few months or claim benefits for a few months. I know which I'd like my children to do.
Life is short, smile while you still have teeth :D
