As you have stated that 'Everyone CAN do some work.' how do YOU expect someone in a Persistent Vegetative State, or a long term coma or someone who is severely mentally or physically handicapped to become self employed or even employed?
To me been able to work and been employable are two different things.
Its my view for ESA someone should be assessed to see if they employable, not simply if they can do basic tasks as is now.
The reason is been able to type a few words out on a computer or watch eastenders doesnt mean one can work.
To work one has to.
Job search - this isnt only physical but be mentally capable of handling rejections
Attend interviews (to even get the job)
Attend the workplace
Dress appropriately
Work hours employer requires, typically set hours every week.
Be punctual
Have a good attendance record.
To not be a danger to others and themselves.
Only the very last one is taken into account on the assessments, and perhaps only at extreme cases. On top of this the assessors are allowed to pretend people get treatment they not actually getting such as eg. having a wheelchair when they dont have one.
Also to address some points tokenfield made.
A fair few years ago I used to be on IB, I was regurly assessed, I think like now on ESA different people get assessed at different intervals, just with IB there was no upper limit but on ESA is a 3 year limit. DLA also appears to be still a gateway to ESA, a lady on another forum was turned down for ESA several times, then she managed to get high rate DLA, and her next ESA claim after that was 3 years support group without an assessment. Her health and diagnosis remained the same, the only thing that changed was she was getting DLA medium rate care and high mobility and everyone agreed on that forum her DLA got her into ESA.0 -

Doctor does not believe that the overwhelming majority of disabled cannot do some sort of work!
Now, I suppose we will have a page or two of people ripping into his qualification to make this comment. If so, at what level does it take to be qualified to make the comment that?
he cant.
90% of been a medical professional is about listening to the patient and accepting what they tell you, if you cant have that trust then dont be a doctor.
not benefit related but my mum was told for decades her problems were been overweight and just minor conditions, after she moved to a different area, she has since found out she has numerous back problems including slipped discs and a chronic shortage of oxygen. All were failed to be diagnosed here and instead blamed on a bad lifestyle.
Me personally I have changed GP 3 times in 2 years due to bad doctors, and surgeries only staffing with locums.
this professior hawkins guy?
is he wealthy?
has he been ill his entire life?
does he have others around him supporting him?
all too often we hear about the rarities of people who are severely disabled working and then assumptions are made everyone can do it, but there is one common factor I see that isnt addressed, that is that people who are disabled that work usually already held their job prior to their health declining and usually the jobs are mostly mentally based.
Its like when someone see's a 70 year old jogging they assume right we must raise the retirement age to 70 as all 70 year olds are fit.0 -
Question for tokenfield.
I'm in the Esa support group. I have depression, personality disorders and psychosis. Everytime I've tried working or starting a course I end up in hospital or seeing the crisis team because I can't cope around people and have no ability to concentrate or focus on anything. Do you know anything about these conditions or what causes people to develop personality disorders so they can't function in the world? I would love to be able to work and have some sort of life. I have nothing, no family no friends just mental illness and mental health workers who check on me.
Obviously if you think everyone can work please tell me what I can do.0 -

tokenfield was a troll, they have now been banned. If you have a question others can help with feel free to start a new thread0 -
Thanks for letting me know tomtontom.
I only posted because it feels bad to be accused of not wanting to work when the most frustrating thing is that you can't. i know there must be some who cheat the system, and that people like tokenfield should be ignored, it just would be easier to do that if it didn't hurt to know what people think of you.0
