My father has a measley pension which in his latter years he uses to pay for his items.

At the very least you father's pension should be toped up to the MIG which is about 130 pounds a week.

On top of that if he's in private rented accom he should be getting HB up to the limit of a one bed flat, though if you're working and you are sharing a property your income is taken into account.

The OP's income is quite low if it is just above the limit for carer's allowance so their non-dependants contribution would be low as well.
I pay rent for him and all his bills so yes i do make contributions

One council suggests £13.60 for LHA and £3.65 for CT.

Actually as OP is a non dependent then it is the 2 bed rate (and it's a council place, hence the original question )

Non dependent deductions will be based on whether the OP's dad is receiving AA or not. If he is then there should be no deductions.

Since the OP says he is paying rent and CT then I guess the dad isn't on AA.

And if he is not getting AA, he maybe ought to apply?

I have NO savings all my money is used on household bills. My father incurred alot of debt so through step change i pay this for him too. SO without much money I cant afford it.

Hi and thanks for your post,

It sounds like your father could do with some further debt advice. If you get him to call us, with his permission we can also speak to you.

At the very least we'd need to look at his budget to make sure he can afford to live and pay his own essential bills. We can also run a benefit check for him and talk through other debt solutions.

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Mat

Hi - He already has an account with CCCS which I pay for him. So his pension is all his which is only £200ish pounds.

Im more concerned that I will be homeless when he passes on and I do not know where to look for help.

    I echo this.

If you are going to be homeless we are trying to help you increase your income so you will be able to find rented accommodation if the worse comes to the worse.

    What is your dad's income?

If he has a 'measly' pension then he should be claiming Pension credit, does he?

If he has care needs (since you are caring for him then it seems he does) he should be claiming Attendance Allowance. Does he?

if he is receiving Attendance Allowance then you will not have to pay anything towards the rent or council tax as there will be no non dependent deductions.

If he has debts then his repayments should be based on his income. If he is receiving Pension Credit then he should be making token payments or getting a Debt Relief Order for debts below £15000 or going for Bankruptcy if the debts are over £15000.

Now can see why we are asking all these questions? Your dad shouldn't be in this financial position and nor should you.

Please don't be defensive we are honestly trying to help.

Please answer the questions and then we can move on.

You will not end up homeless. If you are working then you should be able to afford private accommodation.

If you aren't willing to answer the questions then I suggest that you google 'taking over a council tenancy' and you will find the information you are looking for as regards the current property.

I cannot afford private accomodation which is why im scared I will be made homeless.
My dad does not receive AA because I earn just above the limit for carers allowance so he cannot claim for this - according to the CAB.
His pension is £255 a month. Which he uses for his food and going to a club he joined to be more independent.
  • Oh and I pay his debts off for him too.

There are a lot of extremely knowledgeable and helpful people who post here and whilst it may seem they are a little brusque they are trying to ascertain your exact situation so they can advise you correctly

I would suggest you post a message that explains your living arrangements (Own, private rent, social rent) employment (hours, salary) your fathers pension arrangements (what private pension, what state pension) brief details of the debts and payments you make and a summary of which benefits you claim, have tried to claim or are about to claim

People will then be able to advise you correctly about your current situation and possibly some advice on your future

Google suggests your father should get a minimum of £145 a week so something is clearly wrong
  • Who is your father's tenancy with eg council? What does it say about rights for anyone else to succeed (=take over) the tenancy?

Its not with the council and I have been advised that if my father passes the house will be sold and I will have to find other accomodation. This was confirmed in writingto my dad too.
