Homeless and council help

Im not sure if I titled this very well but lets see if anyone can help. I currently care for my elderly father who is not very well. I pay all his bills and rarely have any money left at the end of the month.
I have tried asking my brothers for help but they are married with children and bills of their own so I hate to be a burden to them.

My fear is that when my father dies I will have no where to go, I have written to the council and they said because I am young and healthy I would have to become homeless and even then they could not help me. I have literally no money to save and I am so scared that I will be homeless.

Does anyone know what I can do as it is making me sick with worry. I cannot stay with family as they live so far away from me.

Thanks for your advice in advance.

Have you made sure that your father is getting all the benefits to which he is entitled?

Check www.turn2us.org.uk and speak to AgeUK.

If his income in increased, you may be able to save some money.

Have you also asked for an care assessment? As a carer you are entitled to that support.

Deleted_User you should post this over on the benefit boards .

I'm no expert but you should be able to claim towards the cost of his care . Copy and paste it on there for some advice :)

    Good Luck :)

Do you work, or are you looking after your father full time?

Are you getting all the benefits you're entitled to as a carer?

Presumably when your father dies, you'll be able to work?

Does your father own his house? Who is the beneficiary if he does own it?

You're not being the burden to your brothers, and neither should your dad be. Do they know your (and your dad's) financial situation?

Yes I do work and I am not claiming carers allowance as I earn just over the limit

I have not always lived with my dad I gave up my flat and moved back with him when my brother and his wife moved out.

Yes the family does know his situation but cannot help as they have their own issues. As the youngest with no family it fell to me to step up and care for him.

My dad does not own the house we live in.

So have you checked whether your FATHER is claiming all the benefits to which he is entitled???????????

Remember that you need to make non-dependent's contributions to the household income for rent and CT (based on your income).

Is this social housing and has he already inherited the sole tenancy from a joint tenancy with his wife?

Councils are very determined to say no to anyone who comes to them with a housing query in my experience (due to a shortage of housing stock). That is the underlying 'reason to be' with their housing advice. They no longer advise on rights, options or alternatives. They may give advice that is not strictly correct.

I'd contact your local CAB or Shelter and find out if your name can be put on the tenancy agreement (and if it has to be on the tenancy agreement for a period of time before you acquire rights to housing). This means you will need to find out how many changes to a tenancy your council will allow and if your father has already changed the tenancy that number of times. Check this carefully, because mistakes are easily made. Then I'd go to the council and get a letter from them (with CAB's help if possible) stating that you have rights.., if you do.

Then you need to look at if you have any rights as a 'close relative', as his daughter.

It is possible that you may be able to have the tenancy passed to you if your father dies, and then negotiate to get a smaller property.

My mum passed away nearly 10 years ago, the house is not my dads. I pay rent for him and all his bills so yes i do make contributions. He nearly committed suicide over his bills so we went to the CAB and they ensured that he had all his benefits checked - so yes I have done this with him. He is 80 years old.
