Birthdays: What do normal people do?

Nowadays most of us spend more time than we'd care to admit online, actually I'm beyond caring now. I enjoy being online & that's that, birthday or not! However, I never, ever, tell the world my business on FB, the last thing on my mind is FB when I'm out enjoying m'self. I suppose at one time I would've thought that people on the internet had no life, but now I understand for many of us that the internet is our lives.
As for my birthday, I go on holiday & I will accept nothing less these days, life's too short
You might have something there
I'm not one of those *tag yourself everywhere but the toilet* types......nor do i put continual photos of my children to emphasise how much time i spend with them........
I might change my status once a week if i remember

I bloody hate birthdays. Always have done. Hate the fuss!
Like many others, i'm usually working. Some of my friends buy me presents, which usually get shoved in a drawer somewhere.
People are already asking me what i'm doing for my 30th next year. Nothing is the answer!!0 -
I imagine it was an implied insult.(in the realms of there's so much more to life than being online)
Or she may have been being sarcastic. I doubt it...I can have quite a sarcastic nature myself & i didn't take it as that but who knows?
Maybe it was just a throwaway comment & I'm reading more into it than necessary
God forbid i might be hormonal:eek:
You could be just as sarcastic back though - I think if one of my friends had said that I'd have retorted pretty quick back to them. depends on how well you know them...and how well they'd take a sarky comment back. I'd like to think most of my chums would chortle if I went back at them with something relevant to their lives...Sanctimonious Veggie. GYO-er. Seed Saver. Get in.0 -

I really think you're reading too much into it.
I read it as a jokey comment about how much time people in general spend online these days, so that a full day away is a bit 'naughty'. Obviously it isn't, it was tongue in cheek, relax a bit!0 -
I think Birthdays are special and should be treated differently to just a normal day. The majority of us work hard, look after our children, homes, pets etc and just that one day a year is so nice to spoil that other person. You don't need to spend loads, we do a few decorations (can be bought from the poundshop!) have a nice breakfast or tea and generally spoil the Birthday boy or girl! We spend family time together every weekend and we all like to go the extra mile on birthdays, I find it rather sad to hear some people just don't bother, lots of misery in the world, who wouldn' like to be spoilt once year by their nearest and dearest!0

I find birthdays really funny. I'm only 24 but, to me, it's just another day. A nice meal in the evening and maybe a couple of cards is nice, but really, it's my mum who achieved something on that date, not me :rotfl:
Most of my friends book the day off work for their birthdays and a lot of them expect their OHs to as well... me, well I might have a hot chocolate insread of a cuppa for breakfast to mark the "occasion" . Maybe I'm just a miserable old b*ggar !! (I actually think it's because I make lovely memories with DH and DD every day , bbut that's a bit smug)

Me. I can't think of anything more annoying or horrible tbh.
I want to be spoilt and appreciated every day.. like I am special to them not just there to be nice to one day a year.. I'm not going to forget if I have been treated shoddily 364 days a year and think 'oh well.. it doesn't matter they were nice to me on my birthday!'

I've only ever worked on one of my birthdays. I take the day off and spend it doing something nice. Now I'm with my OH, we usually go away on holiday for our birthdays, and will go out for a nice meal in the evening. This year I had a lovely meal on the balcony of an old windmill in Greece. You can't think of 'anything' more annoying or horrible' than being treated by your loved ones on your Birthday?! Really! I could think of a hundred worse things, death of a loved one, redundancy, terminal illness etc
We are nice to each other every day of the day, Birthdays are just that bit more special and a reason to be spoilt with a little present or 2 and a special meal maybe. Maybe your family can afford that treatment every day but mine can't! Do you have kids, are their birthdays treated as just a normal day as well? I don't understand your point of view to be honest, it doesn't have to be either or situation, nice year with family, a bit extra on birthdays.0 -
Generally, I wouldn't have the day off work for my birthday, but I go out somewhere nice if I'm not working, or go out on the nearest Saturday to my birthday. Typically, l like to go to the theatre.
If it's a birthday with a zero on the end, I like to do something really special. For my 50th, I was on a Panama Canal cruise.Early retired - 18th December 2014
