Birthdays: What do normal people do?
Comments
-
I've never made a big deal of birthdays and I'm not 40 yet!
This year, I'm working and so is my OH. We might have a nice meal a few days either side of the date, but we eat out a lot normally, so it won't be anything special.0 -
Assuming (yes i know it's T'internet) most here are relatively normal.... What do you do on your birthday when you get past 40?
Is it *just another day*?
Or do you make a point (and fuss) about doing something special * because it's your birthday*?
*genuine Q btw
Has someone ignored your birthday.
I treat mine as just another day.
I make a fuss of my OH, son, dad & MIL as I think it's their special day.Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.0 -
We always do presents and cards in bed (for us or the kids alike)
Special birthday breakfast with balloons and croissants etc
Then school/work whatever is required according to the day
Evening - dinner out or a nice meal in with birthday cake and a film etc.
Kids always have parties.
We will sometimes have a "do" with family too.
Birthdays are special.
We always try and make the most of them as these are the best days of our lives and they are for sharing and enjoying with each other.

I am almost 60 and ever since I met OH when I was 25 we have always celebrated both our birthdays.
I have never worked on my birthday (OH has worked his occasionally if he could not get time off) and most times we go away at least for the 1 night if not a couple of nights.
If, for whatever, reason, we cannot go away, we usually go out for the day and have a nice meal too. We always buy each other a nice card and some sort of present, even if it's only a small silly things.
Birthdays to both of us are important and a day we can spoil the otherThe world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -
Small handful of cards from immediate family (and pets!) and a meal out with OH (although this time just had a BBQ for the two of us to make the most of the weather).
Usually buy myself something little (maybe £20).
Would probably be a bit more adventurous on a big birthday, but that would probably just entail inviting family for a meal.

Nothing (major) has happened
Apparently, I am strange. (Yes i know that comes as no surprise to some people)
It was my birthday yesterday. I was *coff* more than 40 but not near 50. OH was at work (12 hour shift) as he is today. Family situation means we don't go out in the evening.....
I have a FB account & had timeline messages wishing me a happy birthday, so...as it is in polite society , I thanked everyone this morning for their good wishes and joked that I'd had a day off from the computer, hence not thanking them til this morning.
Apparently, having a day off from the computer is nothing to be proud of & I should be ashamed! :rotfl:

I generally take the day off if it falls on a workday and do exactly what I want. Sometimes that's a filmfest, sometimes it's lying in bed reading, sometimes it's a day out at a museum or whatever. This year I ended up working and DH surprised me with a nice meal that evening."Save £12k in 2019" #120 - £100,699.57/£100,0000

Nothing.. I loathe my birthday have done as long as I can remember.. I've never had a party and hate the fuss.. I'm a day older than I was the day before.. leave me alone!! lol.
The last time I had a cake (we have a family tradition of a gathering on the day which is my birthday unfortunately)I locked myself in the loo the entire time and stood with a face like thunder while everyone else did cake... I was 10!
Post 40... I'll have a cake for my 100th and hopefully I'll be too senile to notice or care!
I'd rather people were pleasant all the time rather than make a show of 1 day which happens to be the date I was born... being born isn't special.. we've all done it, I don't understand the fuss!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

yep, me too, after my 21st it became just another day. I used to take the day off work on my birthday, have a "me" day, but for years its been just another day.
