The Game Cemetery

Options
So in the spirit of MSE - what do you all do with your games once you've finished them? Do you (I should hope not) send them off to landfill? Pass them on to someone else? Sell them (if so, where?)? Trade them in (where?)? Store them away for future sessions? Use them as tasteful coasters, or create a piece of art with them?

What should we be doing with them? What's the best way to treat our faithful little friends once they've fulfilled their duties?

Above all of that - what's the most money-savvy way of dealing with them?

I for one keep my all-time favourites, and purchase ones that need to be rescued from the game cemetery (CEX) such as ones that I remember playing as a child and absolutely loving. And the ones that I didn't really connect with (but still played through to the end, of course) I trade in to CEX. Unless they're part of a series that I love (*cough* AC3 *cough*). But sometimes I just can't condone trading them in, considering the length of time that I've had them for and the price that I purchased them at - sometimes I just can't trade in a £40 game for £5. No sirree bob. Is that wrong?

They are on one of the many bookcases dotted around my house. I can never bring myself to throw a game away, and I do go back and replay old stuff when I'm in the mood. Some of my old Sega games are just as fun today as they were when I was 4.

My game collection easily totals over 3,000.

I have over 200 games in my collection, ranging from Amstrad cassette tapes to PS3/xbox 360 games. So as you probably guessed, I'm not one for selling or trading in my games lol.

I rarely trade in. On the few times I have it has been for more than what I bought the game for, apart from one trade in I did years ago.

I've sold a few games through various sites and on average I'm probably not any worse off.

I've managed to get a lot of games very cheap, but for some the trade in/sell prices have really dropped and so however cheap it was at the time (or even still is) I'd be making a loss through selling them. So if I sell them at any point it'll be at the same time as selling some other games so hopefully the overall amount I get won't seem as bad :)

I rarely trade them in, mostly because the majority of them are in various states of completion - only the ones that REALLY annoy me get sent packing!

I recently sold most of my Sega collection. Most went on eBay with a few rarer items going to collectors in Japan and the States.
I've kept my Atari (2600/7800) collection as some of those are getting harder to find in complete condition.

I sold most of my C64 (except for ones with sentimental value) as a job lot on eBay.
My Spectrum games can go over my dead body. I have some fond memories of my Dad and I spending many hours sat at the Spectrum he bought me when I was 10. It was that computer that started me on my career path.

Every other retro game I've ever owned is safely stored away here or at my Mom's house.
I have a select few PC games here, the rest I recently gave to a good friend who is also a retro gaming enthusiast.

I sell my games at either Cex or Game (used to get Gamestation to match Cex). I have a look through what games I have and those which ive not played on for a while I get rid.

So true - it's heartbreaking to see how little our games and movies are worth 2nd hand.

The worst part is, the longer we hold onto them for the less they are worth (unless they're rare or classics that may increase over time).

I managed to buy Final Fantasy VIII for PS2 pretty cheap and bought a few extra copies. I put them in my cupboard and forgot about them and a few years later flipped them on ebay for several times over what I paid.

But usually the games will just go lower and lower in value.
Best thing you can do is once you've stopped playing a game and can be honest with yourself and say 'I'm really never going to play this game again" - that is the time to sell it.

The longer you hang onto it the less it's going to be worth and isn't going to be worth your time listing it on ebay, if it even ends up selling at all.

    I keep all my games.

althou for the last few years, most of the games i've bought have been via steam, so theres little option to do anything else anyways

My cellar has boxes of consoles and games. I'll never play most of them again but I'm not keen to part with it all, especially the stuff I've owned since I was a kid.

I've only got a fit bits worth real money but all my consoles are boxed and pretty much mint so altogether with the hundreds and hundreds of games I'd probably get a reasonable amount for it all.

I never trade in or buy pre-owned, I just wait for the new price to come down so buy the time I get most new games they have very little resale value and I'm better off just adding them to the collection.
