Yes, at Xmas I sent my friends kids £5 each and had 3 lovely thank you notes which was a huge surprise - I was very touched!

My sister insists her two send out thank you cards after every birthday/Xmas, as our mother did for us. The oldest is just old enough to have a go at writing her name, the younger helps decorate the cards. It's a gesture i really appreciate and i've kept them all!

Also made sure i sent out thank you cards (also home-made) after our wedding. If someone has been good enough to give you a gift, it's only right you thank them

OH I do agree with Dimey about thank you notes. When I have gone to some trouble to please it is very disappointing to hear nothing. The amount of texts and facebook posts etc. it should be easy to say `received with thanks`!

Ask for the money back? NO

Let the mum know exactly how you feel = absolutely!
Maybe you can guilt trip HER into giving you something back if you explain how difficult it was for you to have given so much.
