I am not at the point yet where I need or want HRT but this is likely to be the plan if and when my periods become less and less frequent over the next few years. My doctor explained that HRT will replace the hormones lost through menopause (to protect bones etc and also alleviate some of the peri symptoms). I am currently 41 and believe I have been peri for a couple of years at least with symptoms worsening significantly in the last 8 months. Early menopause is the norm on my mum's side and it seems I am following that pattern.
When you start seeking help from your GP for an explanation of your symptoms and/or help with symptom relief it is important to be patient and find a doctor that takes the time to explain the issues that matter to you.
It might be worth checking out https://www.menopausematters.co.uk, a website recommended by my GP. There is all sorts of advice and information on there as well as forums where you can discuss symptoms, stories and treatment openly.0 -

I can only speak for myself. I have a family history of osteoporosis and so took HRT until age 52 for its protection.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

Hi Ladies, I have a couple of questions I wonder if anyone can help me with. At what point can you say you are through the menopause - is it when you haven't had a period for a certain amount of time? Also my teeth have become very sensitive and I wonder if this is a menopause symptom? Finally when I get out of bed in the morning my toes and feet are really stiff and I find it hard to walk for a couple of minutes anyone else experience this?
I have been period free for nearly 7 months and I'm 51 - thanks0 -

Ive heard that it's when you haven't had a period for 12 months.
Not sure about your other symptoms.
I've started getting pain in my hip and buttock and I'm wondering if this is a peri menopausal related 'thing'?GE 36 *MFD may 2043

Perimenopause ends once you've gone 12 months without a period, regardless of whether you're over 50 or not.

Some of my colleagues tell me they went 10 months or so and then their periods started again for a few months.
I wish everyone was a bit more open about perimenopause so as younger people knew more about it - I had no idea what to expect and genuinely thought you just got a bit hot for 2 or 3 months so have found the variety of symptoms, and the unpredictability very hard to deal with. I'm 3 years in and am hoping I don't have much longer to go, and can't wait until my periods start to space out a bit.
Not sure about sensitive teeth, or stiff toes and feet though I have had tingling in my toes and fingers which can be a symptom.0 -
Thank you for your replies ladies.
I agree with you beecher2 I too wish people would be more open about what to expect and share what they have experienced as it does seem like a lonely journey through a mine field at times!0 -
I am telling anyone ne who will listen, haha.0

Has anyone here gone through surgical menopause?
Since I last posted, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and had a hysterectomy and ovaries removed. Asked gynaecologist about menopause and he didn't have a clue.0 -

Goodness, you'd think a gynaecologist would be an expert.
I've notice these forums during my desperate google searches of 'when will this be over' and hope they might be a help.
