If you go to this site: http://www.make-baby-stuff.com/baby-sling-patterns.html
there is loads of info about making baby carriers, and a link to babywearer.com which also has lots of good general info (although American, so less helpful on actually buying stuff)
I would go cheap & simple with a new baby whilst you get the measure of their temperament. My babies would not do the "cuddle into mum" bit past 3 months and wanted to look out on the world.
By 5-6 months I had them in a rucksack-type carrier - very expensive now, but IMHO worth every penny as I rarely used a pushchair. I had a very cheap second hand one for odd occasions, but could have managed without it, as I only used it when looking after other people's kids.
Sorry I can't help with ergo carriers.

There are A LOT of fake Ergos about, generally if the price is too good to be true, it'l be fake. Better to buy from a reputable seller or direct from Ergo themselves.

I used my moby till DS2 was about 13/14 months - DH used a back pack carrier with him when he was older (once he sat up unaided) but I didn't like it, hence if we went out alone he went in the moby, if we all went together DH took him on the back pack - including up Snowdon etc

I second a sling library. Also google "sling meet".

I never got on with my Moby, didn't have enough patience to wrap it round me plus my LO was born in the summer and I was sweating in a stretchy. I now have a Manduca and am happy with it, although it's only used occasionally. My 15 month old loves it (and likes to sleep in it) but it's not practical for longer days out as you need to carry all the bags yourself (I love my pram's HUGE basket!).

Re Ergo - I think their website has links to shops that sell originals and also a list of websites that are known for selling fakes.
  • @Scottishchick ... didn't realise B was born on bonfire night... makes sense now as to why your had your carrier made with fireworks on! Steph x
