we are a small island of fixed resources, and cannot afford to just keep on letting foreigners in - using up our precious resources !!

The Solar Panels on a local school would probably break even at worse for their power requirements, if they live in one of those stupid areas in which the council demands lights be on 24/7 to deter vandals!
And for those neg-sayers who thing you need to be in California or the Aussie outback to get good value out of S.P.'s well oddly enough if it's daylight outside then the panels work, they might not work at 100% in the north of Scotland under heavy storm clouds in the middle of winter but they still work.Laters

. . . . and is anyone gonna answer the question about the current rates?:question:0

I refer the above poster to post 2.That gum you like is coming back in style.0

It took me just a few minutes to find them following the first post
But clearly the OP couldn't be bothered to spend the time doing the research and expects us to do it for them....'cos they think we are stupid, idle, whatever.
Given that this is a commercial installation rather than a domestic one, I felt even less inclined to assist and anyway the all rules (and not just the feed in tarrif rates!) for large commercial sized solar installations are totally different to domestic ones of less than 4KW so not really applicable to a MSE site.
Get professional advice might be the best suggestion.............0 -
Thanks to everyone for your comments on this
I work at an ACADEMY, Which is largely out of local authority financial control - we deal with our own budget.
Next - the statement that it is not "green" !!
How long do you think the country is going to last - on our own resources ?
The latest news is that we are going to import "fracked" gas from the states - how green is that ?
With the cost and pollution caused directly by the diesel engines of the tankers - and the cost (£'s) - not very ...
As for the grants available - yes, if offered - we would be stupid to refuse them.
And selling the excess back to the grid - at twice what we pay for our power too ! Yes - during summer evenings (after 3:30 pm), weekends and school holidays - this should recoup the initial cost of the panels - eventually !!
(But that is only part of the reason for doing it)
Hopefully - we can, at least, power our 800 + low energy light bulbs - which are on (ONLY) during school hours and possibly some of the 500 computers too !!
So I stand by my attempts to persuade my school board to implement my suggestion
No matter how small an effect it will have on the countries ability to "leave the lights on".
And finally - the school will achieve recognition for being a "green" school
This will hopefully only be a start - next Ground Source Heat Pumps for heating ...
As for the comment that this forum is not a suitable place for "business questions/comments/advice" - where does it state this in the rules ?0 -

If you really think that solar pv panels are the big solution to energy generation in the uk, why do you think that the big energy companies (looking at offshore wind, tidal, hydro etc) are not building solar farms?
The government "promise" to pay people to use them is the only thing that makes them viable - wonder if the fit and rhi schemes will last through the next recession...(probably as they are only benefitting the middle/upper class)This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Water power requires Water
Wind power requires space/ understanding neighbours etc
But yes I am willing to consider alternatives ¦!0 -
How do you heat your home, I use gas along with 80% of the population. Windmills and Solar are of little use here. We either develop fracking, or continue to supplement our diminishing north sea gas resources from the gulf (dodgy), or the oil and gas fields of California.
We are sitting on 500 years of coal, and should be looking at clean coal and carbon capture along with pushing ahead with new Nuclear. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

Yes - I use gas - but we are not talking about heating here - we are talking about saving some of the planets natural resources for people like you and me to be able to continue to heat our homes - using the power of our own choice
If the school manages to power 100% of its lighting by solar - surely that is a result to be congratulated rather than (as some of you appear to think) laughed at (or worse)
I fail to see the downside ....
Solar is never going to be enough to power the whole of the UK - even in combination with wind and wave - unless the efficiency of solar panels increases dramatically (1kw /sq m of energy from the sun falls on the earth - so if only 10% of that could be converted to electrical energy - no more energy worries ever) - we will always need an alternative / reliable source - be that Nuclear / coal / oil / gas..... (until the latter 3 run out - or before there is a nuclear accident !!)0
