I am trying to talk my employer (a school) in to fitting solar panels on the roof and benefitting from the feed in tariff for selling any excess energy back to the grid
However - I cannot see any up-to-date rates
They have been changed recently - but to what ?
We are talking about possibly 10 * 4kW arrays...

Thank you for encouraging your employer to install a mega bling ecomental array that will doubtless contribute a little more to my increased energy costs.

Nice to know that the school has got £50K (10 * 4Kwp arrays)burning a hole in its pocket.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

It makes financial sense - considering the fact that we can save a huge amount of money, we pay only 6p per unit for our current electricity used and any excess energy that is produced is sold back to the grid (at 14p per unit/kWh) - so weekends/ holidays - the school would be making a considerable amount of money...
There is (of course) corporation tax to be paid on this income www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/bimmanual/bim40510.htm) - although even this is quoshed for the first year..

But as long as we limit the amount of energy produced to 50kW - it is counted as "microgeneration" - which is simpler to deal with
http://www.ofgem.gov.uk/Pages/OfgemHome.aspx

Grants are even available to businesses to fit the panels

So - what are you complaining about ?
Why should it affect you or anyone else for that matter ?
Someone has to do something or the available resources for power are going to start to run out - and this makes sense !!

haha, so you're saying you want to install solar panels to save the planet?!
not because the government are paying people to install them?
If the technology was actually efficient and cost effective, it wouldn't require government subsidy to get people to use it...
assuming the school is private otherwise you will need to convince local authority offices to spend the 50k, not just the school

Indeed, it was revealed over the weekend that hundreds of diesel generators are being installed across the country to provide power to essential services in the event of the unreliable windmills are not generating sufficient power.

At what cost to the environment?

raise a valid point and out come the immature jibes - fair enough -good luck trying to convince a school board or the local authority with such a convincing argument!

There is nothing wrong with creating a revenue stream for the school by utilising the grants, and subsidies that are available.
It the green credentials of such schemes that are questionable.

The use of diesel to for power generation would indeed be detrimental to the environment, as is being reliant on a medieval technology like wind power.

Since when was Windmill technology detrimental to the environment ?
I agree that it would be silly to rely on just windpower for anything that you want to run reliably - but "detrimental to the environment" - it certainly is not !!
What the country needs is a combination of Wind, Solar, Ground Source, Wave, Thermal etc etc - in combination with a reduced (or at least fixed) population, through restrictions on immigration (predicted to rise by 1million per year for the foreseeable future) -whilst "EUROPE" may not like it - we are a small island of fixed resources, and cannot afford to just keep on letting foreigners in - using up our precious resources !!
