Asda tax issues

They did not blindly follow HMRC's guidelines and incorrectly worked out your tax. They followed the only procedure that PAYE allows.
Yes they would as that is what the PAYE system allows.
It is very unfortunate for asda employees or anyone else who had a month 14 payday that fell in tax year 2013-13.
As this happens to weekly paid workers (no offence meant as all are paying taxes to the exchequer) every 5-6 years but their bill falls below the "threshold" set by hmrc, it seems very unfair that workers who pay their taxes for 22-23 years are "picked upon/hounded/discriminated/have to pay immediately" when they pay every 4 weeks for 286 or 299 paydays and are do not underpaid except for this.
Can anyone justify this.
Maybe need to contact MPs.0 -

It is going to happen to all 4 weekly paid workers ( and I'm one of them too ) at some point or another. It's not just tax year 2012/13.it seems very unfair that workers who pay their taxes for 22-23 years are "picked upon/hounded/discriminated/have to pay immediately" when they pay every 4 weeks for 286 or 299 paydays and are do not underpaid except for this.
I doubt you are being picked upon/hounded nor discriminated against. You owe tax and it needs to be paid. Most workers have been given until April 2015 to pay this and at £10pm approximately through a tax code change. Those that cannot have it coded out have been advised to phone HMRC and speak to the Hardship advisor to organise repayment over 2/3 years.
If this tax wasn't asked to be repaid would monthly workers then have a case as they only ever get their tax-free personal allowance and never get the benefit of extra allowances as you are suggesting should happen if HMRC just write off this tax owed? Can anyone justify this.
I can justify it more than just writing off £126 of tax for every 4 weekly paid worker.Maybe need to contact MPs.
Perhaps you should. Could you also ask them to change me back to monthly pay which I have had for 36 years and now been forced onto 4 weekly pay?0 -
I am trying to put across the point that it seems 4 weekly paid workers are being discriminated against as they do not have a "upto £50" whereby the tax owed is written off.
If that is the case - why do not the hmrc get the tax back from weekly or 2 weekly paid workers on week 53 or 54 - please expand as it must be worth it to help the exchequer.
All must be treated equally surely - £126 over 22/23 years is alot less as you must agree than £30 every 5/6 years.
2by having to pay this and is not "wiped off"0 -

They do have it. Unfortunately they have crossed over it.If that is the case - why do not the hmrc get the tax back from weekly or 2 weekly paid workers on week 53 or 54 - please expand as it must be worth it to help the exchequer.

Everyone is being treated equally as all taxpayers have the £50 threshold below which any tax owed is written off.
What you are really trying to say is that you want there to be no threshold and that all tax owed should be paid. I have no complaint over that at all.2by having to pay this and is not "wiped off"
Sorry - I don't understand what you're saying here.0 -
Just as a matter of interest, has this happened to anyone else?
My tax code changed to 944L this month for pay day one..... I have worked out my allowance correctly (something asda is obviously incapable of doing) and guess what? they have gone and under taxed me again!0 -
I also work for asda and have recieved a letter for 126.00 in underpaid tax , I fully understand if the tax is under paid and I have to pay it but the reasons that asda say why does not add up why is it that we are told because we were paid a extra pay not a problem , buy why out of all the people who work with me only a fraction got the letter?? We are all paid 4 weekly then every one should of recieved the letter and all the people I know have had letters for the same amount . I know our union are dealing with it on our behalf and have produced a template letter to send to the hmrc which I have done , At the end of the day if hmrc want the money back there is nothing we can do!!!0

Some people would still be below the personal allowance even with the 13th payment so would owe no tax.0 -

Everyone's tax code should have changed in April. If you were on the standard 810L last year, you would be on 944L this year. Your personal tax-free allowance was increased in April from £8105 to £9440 hence the change in tax code.I have worked out my allowance correctly (something asda is obviously incapable of doing) and guess what? they have gone and under taxed me again!
Perhaps you can explain how you have worked it out and how Asda has worked it out?0
