If any one can answer this I would appreciate it - can my daughter write to the tax office and request that the payment is taken out through her tax code next year (as I think - not entirely sure as the language used by hmrc is very hard to understand) as it is now to late to use the restriction to collect the underpaid tax this current tax year.

She cannot afford to pay it all up front and she does not have a credit card.
Just phone them. If her income is above £10631 then it can be coded. If it isn't already due to be collected that way and they have asked for payment in full it may be that HMRC do not hold a correct estimate of her income. Get her to phone them (Best times are between 7pm and 8pm, or between 7.45am and 8am) and they will arrange it just so long as she has enough income.

Nobody will be having the amount collected via THIS YEARS code. It can only be collected over a full tax year, so collection will start from 6 April 2014.

GMB Members - Your rep can help if you are stuck with having to pay the tax bill by the 3rd August. (Or if you cannot afford to have it taken in tax throughout 2014.)

GMB Officers from the Asda specific team write :-

A number of ASDA members have received letters from HM Revenue & Customs informing them that in their particular case there was an underpayment of tax in the last financial year (ending April 2013).

We are raising this issue with ASDA at our scheduled forum meeting next week to determine why this has happened, but in the meantime we advise members to contact HMRC to obtain an explanation and full breakdown of their specific amount.

Secondly, officers from the GMB have made contact with Asda, and the company has promised to help colleagues who need time to pay off the owing money,- colleagues should speak to their GMB rep and insist the company arranges as long a time frame as possible to make the repayments (if in fact you do owe anything). Non GMB members should speak to the people team about this.

OR, rather than messing about with Unions who have no idea what they are talking about, go direct to HMRC who will be able to tell you if the underpayment can be collected via your tax code from April 2014 onwards. You can even ask if they can spread this amount over 2 or even 3 years depending on your circumstances.

If not, they can arrange for you to pay the underpayment direct to HMRC over a period of months by Direct Debit, again this could be upto a period of 3 years depending on circumstances.

GMB members should utilise their membership and contact their representative who will be able to help.

    Thanks.

As discussed, you can spread the cost over 2 or even 3 years via the code.

This has already been explained. Unavoidable week 56 payments.
but in the meantime we advise members to contact HMRC to obtain an explanation and full breakdown of their specific amount.
You have an explanation (week 56 pauyments) and a breakdown already (P800 tax calculation)

Secondly, officers from the GMB have made contact with Asda, and the company has promised to help colleagues who need time to pay off the owing money,
This could only be by way of a loan which the employer will collect monthly from salaries.
    - colleagues should speak to their GMB rep and insist the company arranges as long a time frame as possible to make the repayments (if in fact you do owe anything). Non GMB members should speak to the people team about this.

If people wish to waste their time following the GMB's advice I'm not going to stop them. But all of this can be resolved quickly and easily by contacting HMRC.

With all due respect, the GMB officers have been in talks with Asda about this, and unless you work for Asda as a Director, or the GMB (Clearly not) then you won't have any idea what sort of arrangement has been made between the GMB and Asda.

GMB members should utilse their membership and contact their GMB Representative who is able to help.

So for all your GMB members, what arrangement has been made?

This would allow members to see whether it's best to contact HMRC or Asda.

GMB members should contact their GMB representative. Arrangements have been made for all colleagues to get help from Asda in paying for the shortfall in tax. I do not have specifics as yet, but Asda have promised to help all colleagues with this. Details should be sorted after the meeting next week. Everyone should certainly be querying the amounts owed with HMRC, I would suggest by letter as colleagues are being given a scripted reply when ringing, and having the phone put down on them.

The only way Asda is likely to help is to give workers a loan via their wages which they will then deduct a certain amount each payday. This is likely to start from now as opposed to April 2014 when HMRC will start collecting the underpayments.

    I would think it would be better to say;

    1. If the amount can be coded out (HMRC will have made this clear in their P800) then leave it to HMRC.

    2. If the amount cannot be coded out and full repayment is requested by August, then contact your union rep if you feel it will cause financial difficulties.

Dori2o works for HMRC. He's told people who to ask for when ringing rather than just speak to the call centre. Perhaps they should try that first and if they still get nowhere then write to HMRC if they still get nowhere.

Querying the amount is probably unnecessary unless it is very different from what is being talked about on here.

Why should all colleagues be querying amounts owed with HMRC.
Has the union determined any wrong calculations ?
