Hi i hope this is the right part of the forum for this topic.
I work for asda and have received a letter from HMRC saying I underpaid my tax for the year by £126. im not the only one it appears thousands across the company have been affected all over the country and a lot owe the exact same amount.
Does anyone know where do we as employees stand on this? surely this is the fault of the employer is it not?
So now we will all be out of pocket for some monumental screw up from those who are paid to do a job and get these things right.

That is interesting my son got a letter yesterday for the same amount and tried to call HMRC but as usual the phone lines were not being answered. I shall watch this thread with interest to see if he can do anything to sort it out.
Been here for a long time and don't often post

You arent really out of pocket as you should have paid it last tax year, so its just really a delay in payment. HMRC usually just adjust your tax code for this sort of amount, so you wont be hit for it one go.
Unless asda offer a goodwill gesture and pay this on your behalf, you are liable for paying your tax.0 -

You're not out of pocket. You had £126 more than you should have last year.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -

I got a letter saying fill out the slip and pay it in one go.
My tax code has been fine for years as have so many thousands of others and they suddenly are all wrong? i dont know how it can be on such a scale.0 -

it seems most people are due the exact same amount0 -
You should speak to HMRC about adjusting your tax could.
It looks like the wrong tax free personal allowance has been used by asda on their system.
Tax free allowances
2011 = £7475
2012 = £8105
20% of the difference is £126.
Unfortunately as we have said you are liable.0 -
my daughter has today received a demand from hmrc for owing nearly £126 for tax year 2012-13 (year ending 5 april 2013).
She was paid by asda on 6 April 2013 ie start of tax year 2013-14 - Asda should have put in place week 56 payment in place - have looked up - which compensates for these anomalies (apparently only comes around once every 22 or 23 years) - maybe is because they are now run by walmart who may not understand paye in this country.
Many thousands of asda workers are now being hounded - they are not at fault it is the company - I think many people are tearing there hair and worrying how to pay - many are just keeping their heads above the parapet and this could be life or death for some people.

Surely if they had used £7,475 instead they would have overpaid, not underpaid? I've started a thread on 'Cutting Tax', which has some possible explanations: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4702745 but it seems odd that everybody is charged exactly £126.80.0 -

Sorry they would have overpaid. Brain on weekend mode.0 -
When I had tax questions I made an appointment at my local HMRC enquiry center and they sorted out everything in about 10 minutes.
It's an option worth considering. You can't contact them directly, but if you call HMRC's number and ask for an appointment your local office will get back to you.0
