It seems to me there is a choice to be made.., which is more important.., renting your own place and getting away from your parents or your music.
The way the world is, you are going to have problems renting a flat because your earnings are low (i.e. under £13k from what you say) so any affordability judgements that are made by landlords will be difficult. So getting housing benefit itsn't the problem.., its getting a landlord to agree to rent to you.
You also say you won't accept a comporomise solution.., renting a house share which would be a bit cheaper.
I'm afraid something will have to give. You could look for other groups to join that don't involve needing time off on Friday afternoons.., plenty of musicians do this type of gig, and maintain fulll time jobs.
So stop having a go at other people.., work on a way of making moving out possible for you. Its a frustrating situation but it is as it is. Its not the fault of the respondents.0 -

He needs to grow up and think about how he talks to people who are trying to help. I want doesn't get. I learned that as a child.
And i'm usually horrified at the of the things people on this forum say to others regarding benefits i.e. the judgmental snotty remarks. However this man is completely unrealistic and until he compromises somewhere he won't get anywhere.
And I say this as someone in their late twenties on slightly more than the average wage who can't afford to rent a one bedroomed flat because of where I live. But that is my choice.Current debt: M&S £0(£2K) , Tesco £0 (£1.5K), Car loan 6K (paid off!) Barclaycard £1.5K (interest free for 18 months)0 -
I'd just like to add that where I am the council won't even add single adults (male or female) to their waiting lists for property unless they are disabled, all they do is tell you to look in papers etc. for private rentals, if you are a victim of domestic abuse they can refer you to a shelter but that is a short term safe place and could be anywhere in the UK!
They suggest you get help from your parents and also state that being homeless isn't damaging to your health!
So don't expect social housing to be an option - you're very lucky if it is!A waist is a terrible thing to mind.0 -

Because it's not been mentioned, i did skim the posts though, why are you not picking up extra cash via your instrument? i'm guessing because of your U/N that it's piano, so offer yourself out as a tutor in that, or if you're not confident of your own skill, as either keyboard/piano lessons for beginners, or for Jamming with people (paid) All those those options you should be able to do and could rejig it with gigs and such like.
Also if you're struggling to find money now, you wont have a hope of being able to rent somewhere. Housing benefit cuts down as your money goes up, so whether you're over 35 and get full 1 bed rate by the rules, it's doubtful that you will get that with your wages.
Find your local authority website, and locate their LHA/housing benefit (make sure it's the one for private rent) calculator and fill it in and it will tell you about how much you will get.
I'd also suggest you look at writing down one of these weekly/monthly in and out goings things you see on the debt board to find out just how much spare you have, and how much you really have coming it and how much of that would transfer over to paying the cost of rent. Also cost of council tax and water rates, as well as electricity and/or gas.
Whether you doss around on beans on toast for a month or two to give you the needed rent up front then it's down to you, and how much you want to get out of there. Life isn't free, neither is keeping your own standards, and places. It certainly isn't free for benefits either any more!0 -

Let's just say two days a week then. Take off an hour for lunch and an hour or so traveling even at minimum wage that's a minimum of 24hrs at £6.19 which is £148 per week. On top of that you say you get working tax credits and on top of that you say your band is successful both at home and abroad.
Successful bands earn reasonable money so either your band isn't successful or the numbers just don't add up. With the part time job plus the tax credits plus a minimum £200 a week for playing in a successful band your minimum earnings should be around £20,000 per annum, plenty enough to afford to pay for a one bedroom rental property. It's someone else's fault.0
