and its not strange i lied on a forum, its just embarrassing being 39 and living at home still!
i have a partner but were not planning on living together just right now and i feel i just want my own place before i hit 40 in November

i just wanted some help towards the rent if i can pay towards it
Don't be embarrassed I know people in 40s who aren't married and living at home. Mainly for financial reasons, they are hard working but in low paid jobs. Also due to the age of their parents they effectively become carers. Moving out is a big decision for someone in your circumstances- good luck with your move!
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.

i just dont want to have to share with a load of other people, what is wrong with that?

Nothing at all. What is wrong, however, is that you are unwilling to actually work hard and save to achieve your goal of moving into your own home. You want the beleaguered tax payer to 'help'.

    £26k?? your having a laugh!!!

what planet are you on? that's over £2100 a month!

No, it is not. I earn more than that and don't take home over £2,100 a month.

    What planet are you on?

OP we have a friend who drives trucks for a living , he works 4 days a week and is on a lot more money than my partner who works 60 hours a week spread over 7 days ,
could you not get a regular driving job, surely that and your gig money would be enough for one person to rent and live,
my partner works for £6-50 an hour for as many hours as he can get, so we can save to get a good deposit,

you can do if you really want it , but need to change your mind set, stop asking how much help can you get,
get out there and do it

What do you think the average wage for a single person in your area?

The UK average wage is 26k.

On the BBC it said recently that 47% of people earn less than £18K. 26k is worked on taking into account highest and lowest paid jobs. It is a false amount.

I don't understand this comment. Of course it's worked out by including the highest and lowest paid jobs, that what an average is.

If you mean that the average is skewed (upwards) because of a small number of very very high paid jobs then I believe that the average quoted is the median and hence this does not occur.

It is however the average full time salary, whereas the BBC figure could have included part time workers, almost all of which will earn less than an average salary by dint of only working half the week.

(FWIW this is the trick that the unions use to try to show that some sets of council workers are underpaid! LAs being more amenable to job shares than commercial companies are)

It isn't clear whether it is the mean or median wage that is quoted- either way plenty of people earn less than it. I do wonder what it would come out at if they did the modal wage. I was pointing out that there is a difference between the statistical average wage in areas and the actual common wage.

BTW - brain not working at the mo what does FWIW mean?
