I'm getting married on 10 September. The dress I've bought is lovely, but it needs shortening at the front and I want to use that fabric to put on a halter-neck. The shop are also telling me I should have it taken it in at the waist (I have a teeny waist) but I'm not completely convinced.

When I bought the dress, they told me that these alterations would be around £200 - then when I went in for a fitting recently (they had not started the alterations) they said it was going to be £350. That's a considerable jump.

They're quite a pushy bunch, and when I paid the second half of the cost of the dress they even shoved on my bill a veil they made me try on. I asked them to remove it because I didn't want to buy it. I find them difficult to deal with and I'm not best pleased about the increase in cost (wedding's are expensive enough as it is, goodness knows where I'll find an extra £150 from) - and I'm certain that on the final fitting day they're going to increase it some more.

I have been considering going to a private alterations boutique, but I'm worried that they'll ruin the dress. I know that the shop will do a great job though. I've looked through this forum and found a couple of recommended alterations services in Central London which is useful but I would greatly appreciate other comments as to whether I should stick with the extortionately priced shop or half my costs and risk the dress?? Or am I being paranoid??
  • Hi - My sister specialises in Wedding Dress alterations her company TP Sports Limited is based in Ashton Under Lynne, Greater Manchester - private message me and I'll pass on her contact details - she can also do fittings in London!
  • The shop where i'm getting my dress from have the fashion graduates at Liverpool Uni do the alterations, might be worth making contact with your nearest Uni/college to see if they could assist.

    Hi

Not sure if this is the right place for this question, but does anyone know someone who'll alter bridesmaid dresses around (sittingbourne)Kent (though could travel to Essex at a push).

    Thanks

Does anyone know of anyone who does wedding dress alterations in Hampshire, preferably near Southampton, but anywhere considered...

    Many thanks,

  • Does anyone with more than 1 post know anything about Alterations Boutique? I've seen 2 endorsements on this thread, but generally from people whose only post it is.

We used a lady called Jane who does a home call alteration service in the Surrey/Sussex area if that helps:

You can mention Mark and Mary and Tiggs the crazy cat , I'm sure she would remember us!
  • Hi,

I would recommend Alterations Boutique. I used them a month ago to alter my dress. It was a pronovias sample. I got few quotes but they seemed more knowledgeable than the others and I liked that they had their own place and took cards. There seems to be a lot of people that sew from home and that put me off. A couple of people I spoke to only accepted cash or cheque. I would definitely recommend them but try to go for a fitting in the week. They get very busy on Saturday.

    Hope this helps
