Bridal alterations NOT attached to a bridal shop

I've bought my dress and need alterations but bridal shops I've called will only do alterations on dresses bought from them. I know that some dry cleaners do wedding dress alterations but I would really rather get recommendations from people on where to go. I'm in the South East London area and am prepared to travel a little bit if anyone can recommend anyone. Thanks!

They should be listed under dressmakers/alterations in the phone book. Sorry, I don't have any specific recommendations. Whilst I was in a Bridal Shop, they had a noticeboard with various services on. Maybe browwse in a shop and see if they have any (not the ones affiliated to the shop, there may be others). Good luck!A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.
Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.

There's a place in the Whitgift Centre in Croydon called "Sew & Sew" (or something like that).
They might be able to do something for you....0 -

Hi, yes I saw them advertised. Can I just ask if you have ever used them or has anyone here?
I've actually posted my question on some other bridal forums and I've had surprisingly little response. I would've thought that all brides would have had to have some alterations to their dresses and not all of them would have had them done at the bridal shop.0 -
Nope, never used them.
Was thinking of buying my dress on the net and if so I'll obviously need alterations......... I think I might go down there and see if they've got photos or anything from stuff that they've done before.
I might be quite naive, but I would imagine that if they can afford the rent in the centre of Croydon then they're probably pretty good.
Oooh, just found their website0 -
I've just emailed them to ask if they do wedding dress alterations. Will see what they say.......0

Have you got a haberdashery store nearby? I asked in my local one, and they recommended two ladies who both worked from home. The lady who did mine was fantastic. I'd recommend her, but I'm 300 miles away from you! Here I go again on my own....0

Well the good news is that I got my dress today and it's beautiful!
Thanks for all your help on this guys. I like the tip about asking the local haberdashery shop. There's a good one near here, I'll pop in and ask them.
And thanks rlc22 for emailing.
I DID talk to a lady at 123 Cleaners today and she said that she has done many dresses as well as making her own daughters dress recently. I got a nice feeling about her so am going to go down and talk to her as soon as I have my shoes sorted out as well.0 -
Glad you love the dress and that you've got something sorted.
Had an email back from Sew n Sew and they do wedding dresses too - so looks like you've got a back up option too!!0
