No I didn't see any of the scans pick it up. I've just followed your advice from post 29 regarding Regional Languages and Java too. Forgot to do that. But I have now.

delete the google update task from c:\windows\tasks

disable by unticking using msconfig, startup tab

    O4 - Global Startup: Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE

    tick and fix using hijackthis

    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'LOCAL SERVICE')
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'NETWORK SERVICE')
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'SYSTEM')
    O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'Default user')
O8 - Extra context menu item: Search with Wanadoo - res://C:\PROGRA~1\Wanadoo\WSBar\WSBar.dll/VSearch.htm
    O9 - Extra button: Skype Click to Call - {898EA8C8-E7FF-479B-8935-AEC46303B9E5} - C:\Program Files\Skype\Toolbars\Internet Explorer\skypeieplugin.dll
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: c:\docume~1\alluse~1\applic~1\browse~1\261249~1.13 2\{c16c1~1\browse~1.dll

disable these services using services.msc, right click the service, properties, disable

O23 - Service: Adobe Flash Player Update Service (AdobeFlashPlayerUpdateSvc) - Adobe Systems Incorporated - C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\FlashPlayerUpda teService.exe

    O23 - Service: Skype Updater (SkypeUpdate) - Skype Technologies - C:\Program Files\Skype\Updater\Updater.exe

reboot, then a last hj log

when you've finished, if there's space on the external drive, I suggest doing a macrium disk image (not clone, as clone will wipe the external drive), backup, and macrium boot cd, then you can recreate this setup in future (that internal disk is not the most reliable type in my experience). There's a video and links to the backup software in the speedup sticky.

I've managed to perform all of the tasks except for 'delete the google update task from c:\windows\tasks'. I'm unable to find that task. I typed it into the run box and couldn't find it in the tasks folder. I could only find 'Adobe Flash Player Updater'

if you've got hp printer software installed, and no longer used, that could go

    tick and fix
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {8B68564D-53FD-4293-B80C-993A9F3988EE} - (no file)

msconfig disable unless needed at boot

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

Yes. That was for identification of the Motherboard in the case of a clean install being necessary at some point.
