I posted the following message on another forum which wasn't the correct location for it so I'll re-post it here:
"Could somebody give me some advice about getting a new computer. My current system has the following specs:
Quote:
Operating System
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 32-bit SP3
CPU
Intel Celeron 320
Prescott 90nm Technology
RAM
2.00 GB
Motherboard
SiS-661 (Socket 478) 39 °C
Graphics
Default Monitor (1024x768@60Hz)
SiS 661FX
Hard Drives
77GB Hitachi HDS722580VLAT20 (PATA) 35 °C
Optical Drives
TSSTcorp CD-R/RW TS-H292A
Audio
Realtek AC'97 Audio
It's around 10 years old and is just running so slowly. I've been told on some internet forum that it will be difficult for me to upgrade in order to make it run quicker. It's really running slowly now. I'd like something fairly cheap that will allow be to mainly browse the web. I don't play any games. I would be glad of any help. Thanks for reading. "

I was advised to clean it inside and maybe and a reinstall. I don't have the Windows CD as I purchased this one second hand. So I won't then be able to do a reinstall I guess. Cleaning it has made it run a little more quietly and I think a little quicker.

Cisco001,
No I don't need a new monitor.
NiftyDigits,
I don't have any edition....only what was on the PC when I got it last year second hand. It is Windows XP though.0 -
I would say looking at the specs that it is about time to look into treating yourself to a new computer or laptop. Microsoft a dropping support for windows XP on the 8th April 14 so it will no longer be updated and secure.
I always recommend the zoostorm range of pc's but there are other options out there.
If you want to physically buy something for a shop you will pay more.0 -
So, would you prefer to run a clean install or to buy a new PC?
Does this machine have a functional CD writer?0 -
Option 1 - get new PC

Option 2 - Consider lightweight Linux and dual boots.0 -

Yes it does have a functional CD writer. I would prefer a clean install as that would be the cheaper option. Ideally, I would like to hold off purchasing a new computer for now.0 -
