"This copy of windows is not genuine" errrr, yes it is!

I'm a tech phobe, so please be gentle with me :) Can anyone offer some advise please?

This strange message has appeared as I start my laptop. The screen saver has turned black but apart from that I can continue to use my laptop as normal. Thing is I believe that message is incorrect, I've had the laptop from new about 3 years I think and I believe that windows came together with the laptop so it must be genuine.

I've searched Microsoft help and read that this can sometimes happen even when windows is genuine and to resolve the issue I should click on the message to sort it out. there is no error message and when I click the little icon (not sure if that's the correct name for it) it says "not found" or something to that effect.

I'm using internet explorer and windows 7 home premium.

I've also tried system restore but the problem remains.

Any suggestions anyone?

Thanks for reading.

Thank you Closed for your reply, I've now found a phone number. I'm guessing that I'll get through to an automated response press 1 for this and 2 for that. I checked how much the call will cost and there's a 14p connection charge with a 12.5p per minute call charge. So to avoid a half hour wasted call would anyone advise me what kind of a problem I might have?

I'm happy to call them but I'm just not sure how to categorise my problem.

  • Thanks Mr Toad, tried the number you gave me but I don't have an installation number :( Also the sticker on the bottom of the laptop has faded away and I cannot read the numbers on it. So I cant get through on the telephone without this.

My laptop is a Hewlett Packard model no HP G61 notebook PC.

Thank you for your kind offer NiftyDigits if you're online I'd appreciate your help.

Thanks everyone for helping me out here :)

Indeed have been travelling all day and am a bit tired.

We can start again tomorrow. Looks like a BIOS update will be necessary.
Anytime during the day is ok for me. Will probably just be chilling out on the terrace.

Have you had a problem with Malware of late? We'll reset Windows Activation. If that doesn't work, we'll have to Flash(re-install) the BIOS. Problem is that your BIOS is not listed on the website, so may need to be modified manually from what is there or perhaps we can contact HP to see if they have it at hand.

So firstly, we'll eliminate Malware as the issue. Run this program as Administrator(right click after downloading and saving and choose Run as Administrator), make sure there is a tick in 'Regenerate All Activation System' and then click on 'Start Regeneration System'.

When complete and after re-booting, run the program that I sent to you earlier and send me another screenshot via PM.
