Who Does/Does Not Accept Amex?

Beware of using Amex if its a Corporate Card:

I fell into this trap. I had an agreement with my company that they would reimburse me for the expenses on the card. They didnt and I was liable for the whole bill. Due in full after 55 days. Be careful!

Also Amex if you need it is available in some places even when they say its not. Some places say they won't accept it but if your stuck you can tell them that they can add the 6% Amex surcharge to the bill. (Make sure this is on business so that it won't cost you.) They will then in some cases accept the card. Also if its a Corp Card you can also apply for Amex Cash Express - allows you to get money out on the card!:T

It has its ups and downs, but I can thoroughly recommend the American Express British Airways card to people who are into... well, flying BA, like me. You get airmiles with BA and quite comprehensive cover for your travel, including emergency medical aid overseas.

The customer services are also top-notch - I've been phoned personally by someone there twice to respond to any issues I have with it.

In any case, I think the downsides to AmEx are all completely outweighed by the coolness factor of being able to say '...american express?' when you're asked for payment.

Who accepts amex as payment for travel insurance, joint policy, worldwide cover, obvoiusly cheap as pos?

NOT - Direct Travel Insurance, sorry have no idea who does.

Neil, details of John Lewis accepting the card first appeared on the forum about a month or maybe 6 weeks ago, if I'm not mistaken.

What I think is also worth mentioning though is that Amex have some good offers for cardmembers. Check out the American Express Selects page and also this special John Lewis page.

Hi!

I work at Pets at Home and we don't accept Amex.

Not sure how many of those who have Amex shop there though as I have only had 2 people try and pay by Amex in the 5 years I have been there.

But maybe if someone was planning on spending £300 on a couple of chinchillas and cage and all the other stuff you need, it may come in useful to know.

Dear Martin,

The Card is widely accepted on the high street and in restaurants as well as all major petrol stations, major national supermarkets, train operators and
lots more.

However, there were a couple of names on the list of NON accepting merchants,that actually do accept :

Jessops
Halfords

In addition, we sign up merchants every day, so a couple that will begin accepting Amex very soon include:

JJB Sports and London Underground

There is one merchant listed that we are unfortunately prohibited from signing. That's Blue Square, it's a gambling site, and we have a global policy of not
signing up these sites.
