I agree it can be too embarrassing to even attempt to use it in some places, but I find most supermarkets and petrol stations are OK. That said, I tend to just use mine whenever they offer a 0% balance transfer offer, and then switch any remaining balance to another 0% offer, rather than using it for purchases anymore. I only tried to use it in LoLeather to earn some points on a large purchase I was going to clear immediately anyway. Amex's loss is Visa's gain.

What's the best way to cancel the amex card and do you lose your cashback ( in my case quite small)?
  • GE Money do not accept them for payments
  • BCP car parks accepted my AMEX on the online booking but when I arrived at Stansted airport and inserted my card as instructed, it was rejected. On enquiry at the car park office, I was told that the machine's don't like the 'see through' card! How odd!

When I was in the USA with a friend who had an Amex card, he had a bit of trouble finding a place that would take Amex, which, considering it is American Express, we found a bit amusing!

I don't blame shops for being Amex adverse if they do accept the card. What Amex preach in public on payment to the merchant is different to reality.

Not sure if on correct forum- but have a Sony credit card- which I didn't realise is issued by MBNA on behalf of American Express. Not accepted in the Sony shop  at Bluewater when I wanted to purchase a laptop- so I walked out- really annoyed me though. MBNA told me that quite a few merchants will not accept american Express
Are those shopping bags you're carrying really bags of debt???
