That's why I don't trust second hand car dealers, and many mechanics.
Oh dear I just despair.
They have told him a simple way to keep using his car for free.
Its an old banger and not worth repairing.0 -

If he was a mechanic worth his salt, then he could have stripped the engine down, and replaced the rings for less than the cost of a replacement engine.
So 3 days work @ £40 an hour = £800, plus the parts. Then theres oil and fluids. Plus you may as well do the timing belt while you're there.
You're talking £1,000 minimum to strip an engine and rebuild it - assuming they dont find anything else when they're in there.
And you'd recommend doing this on a 10 year old Astra? :rotfl:0 -

Or gee, maybe we're both right?
Clean the plug and drive on at it. £0 cost.
Hows that a bodge?0 -

You haven't worked on engines much have you?0 -

£300-£400 for an engine, a day out and a day in for the new engine = £900.
Just clean the plug once a fortnight. Simples.0 -

Because you should never advise someone with unknown mechanical knowledge to do a temporary fix, when for all you know it could leave them stranded on a dangerous stretch of road, at night, in bad weather, which could leave them at considerable risk.0 -

Tell me where i'm wrong?
The O/P's mechanic has already quoted £900 to do a rebuild.
I had a quote of £900 to do the bearings on a Zafira.
Break down the hours for me then?0 -

Errr, the engine light comes on sometimes?
And i'd strongly recommend anyone running an old car spend £60 on good breakdown insurance.0 -

Well they saw you coming then.
I've removed the engine, stripped it down, and done a complete rebuild, and refitted the it, on a cavalier engine, in one day. And that wasn't even in a workshop.0
