That's why I don't trust second hand car dealers, and many mechanics.

Oh dear I just despair.

They have told him a simple way to keep using his car for free.

Its an old banger and not worth repairing.

So 3 days work @ £40 an hour = £800, plus the parts. Then theres oil and fluids. Plus you may as well do the timing belt while you're there.

You're talking £1,000 minimum to strip an engine and rebuild it - assuming they dont find anything else when they're in there.

And you'd recommend doing this on a 10 year old Astra? :rotfl:

A 53 plate car, with 77k on the clock isn't an old banger. And it may be worth looking for a second hand engine to replace it with.

£300-£400 for an engine, a day out and a day in for the new engine = £900.

Just clean the plug once a fortnight. Simples.

Because you should never advise someone with unknown mechanical knowledge to do a temporary fix, when for all you know it could leave them stranded on a dangerous stretch of road, at night, in bad weather, which could leave them at considerable risk.

I had a quote of £900 to do the bearings on a Zafira.

Errr, the engine light comes on sometimes?

And i'd strongly recommend anyone running an old car spend £60 on good breakdown insurance.

Well they saw you coming then.

I've removed the engine, stripped it down, and done a complete rebuild, and refitted the it, on a cavalier engine, in one day. And that wasn't even in a workshop.
