    And some mechanics are lazy.

If you tell your customers to just clean the plugs occasionally when they buy a car with a similar problem from you, then please tell us all what your dealership is called, so that we can avoid it. :D

    More tripe.

    I have whats called "experience".

I've been motor trading for years and this is a KNOWN PROBLEM with this engine of this vintage.

It *might* not be the problem i've seen but all the symptoms are there, right down to the year and model of the car.

My mechanic is not a 'mate' - hes a guy i paid, as a motor trader to fix the cars i bring to him.

Yes I know a lot of motor traders who don't have a clue about mechanics of vehicles. What some do is just fob customers of by saying something like "don't worry mate, it isn't a problem, you just need to clean your plugs occasionally".

So to be fair, I trust what second hand car dealers say about as far as I can throw them.

And many people have had Astras of the same age, without that problem.

Just because you have had the problem three times (which I would suspect is more down to your driving style), doesn't mean that it is the only possibility.

It won't be the rocker gasket, because that couldn't cause plugs to oil up. The only way oil would leak if this gasket had gone would be onto the outside of the engine block.

    The possible culprits are:
    • Failed head gasket
    • Engine breather problem causing too much sump pressure.
    • Worn piston rings (unlikely on just one cylinder)
    • Broken piton rings (you may be able to hear a tinking noise from the engine)
    All possibilities should be investigated.

Its not down to my 'driving style'. Its cars i've seen whilst being a motor trader.

And you're bang on with worn / broken piston ring - thats exactly what i'm saying - so why have you been saying i am wrong? The oil ring lets oil past it and it can do so on one cylinder - whether you categorise that as 'wear' or 'broken' doesnt take away from the fact its exactly what i'm saying.

Also, they HAVE been investigated - by the O/Ps mechanic for a day and ALL possibilities were checked!!

You really need to start reading the threads properly before you constantly post tripe.

I have. And it doesn't appear that the OP has had a second opinion yet. Unless I have missed it.

The three cars that had been kindly traded in with this problem i disposed of to other traders at a loss to myself.

I wouldnt dream of retailing a car with that sort of problem OR of starting to repair it on a trade in i'd got at that price.

My advice to the O/P is to drive on at it - as he really has little choice, i never said my advice to any of my customers was to do this.

I didn't say you were wrong. I said that you don't know that you are right.

As someone else said, it could be caused by breather problems.

To be fair, you don't know exactly what the mechanic tested. If he was a mechanic worth his salt, then he could have stripped the engine down, and replaced the rings for less than the cost of a replacement engine.

If you read the O/Ps posts, you will see that they said it was their MECHANIC who told them clean the plug rather than put an engine in it.

Also, i'm not here as a second hand car dealer selling someone a car, i am here giving a perspective based on my experience in the motor trade - two totally different things.

And like i said i'm not trying to sell anyone a car on here, i am giving advice based on my experience in this field.

    Whats your advice based on?

Are you a mechanic for example?

Whats your experience with Astras of this genre?

So both you and the OP's mechanic told them to bodge it? :rotfl:

That's why I don't trust second hand car dealers, and many mechanics.
