We recently filled in an online form as we meet the criteria for a free boiler. We were phoned by a fairly local company who then came out and did an assessment. They said that there may be a cost to pay up to £750 but for most people it was much less than this. They then came back to is and said there would be a charge of £780 based on the assessment they had carried out and because we have loft and cavity wall insulation already. Does this sound right?
    Thanks
  • Following advice from MSE I filled out the online form for British Gas to see whether we could get loft insulation for our block of 4 flats (share of freehold, all owner occupiers). I had absolutely no response from them at all. It's all very well announcing these things but you expect to at least receive some sort of response.

I received my £50 gift card from BG after having loft insulation being done in June. When I first rang them to arrange for someone to come out to assess my loft I was asked if there was much stuff in the loft. I replied that there was a fair bit and was told I would be eligible for £150 towards clearing the loft. Was anyone else told this as I haven't heard anything else since then?

I was just told that I had to clear it all, apart from a small area for storage. Never got offered help with that (unfortunately, as I had to pay someone to clear it).

I haven't heard anything about my £50 card yet though - how long did it take for yours to arrive?

I read on here that the funding for free boilers has run out. I had this confirmed last week by 2 independant companies I had been in touch with.
  • hello all,

I have elederly friends who have a boiler that is approximately 30 years old and have heard about this scheme for a free replacement boiler. I have mentioned this to them but they say that they are thinking about moving home within the next two years. I know that they struggled and became ill last year due to the cold weather and cannot afford to get a new boiler.

Does anyone know if they are able to get a free bolier and still move home without any penalties? They are worried if they move within the next two years, then the company that is running the free boiler scheme might ask for the money back as they will no longer be living there.

Does anyone know the answer to this?

P.S. will this apply to free cavity and loft insulation too?
  • Hi, i'm hoping someone can clarify eligibility of FREE insulation.

I live in a Grade B listed building built in 1850. This development was converted into 66 flats after gutting the inside, in 2008.

It turns out the developer didn't insulate the walls or floors between flats and somehow are getting away with it.

The energy rating of the propoerty was advertised (new) as a grade E (45) but it has since been re evaluated and came up with a G grading (14)!

The council signed it off on the basis of a G but it seems there is no recourse for resolving this (other than claiming on insurance and having the flats gutted and redone, which some have done, having to leave their property for up to 6 months).

I contacted British Gas and they said they didn;t cover listed buildings.

Question 1: should i insist that British Gas fits insulation in cavity wall?

Question 2: how would you go about having the flat insulated on the basis that it wasn't done as initially planned (and missold)?

    Thank you!
  • hi I applied to help link for a free conventional boiler about 4 weeks ago, they came and did the survey last week and I was told that I may have to pay £150 for a 22mm gas pipe which will run out of the meter box door along the gable end and across the back wall to the kitchen. I don't mind paying £150 for a new gas pipe, but to run it around the exterior of the house dosn't make sense. then today I received a call from them asking for £950 towards the cost. I was just wondering if this is normal practice or are they trying it on thanks mick

If it's done under green deal then mse says:
The loan is attached to your home's electricity bill, not you. So if you sell or rent it out, the new occupiers will make the Green Deal payments through their bills, in exactly the same way as you do
