hi,
what, ! No boilers again. ?
I got gas into our 2 flats at last, and both tenants are still arranging home assessment visits from Sprint energy, they haven't been told, soz, no freebies.
Is the funding the same in Scotland. ?
Also, if we end up buying them ourselves, whats best make for a 1, and a 2 bed flat?
combi, but not condensing.
THANKS
week
I am not sure on the situation in Scotland, but in England there is funding there but it is not providing 'free' boilers installations it is paying about half the install cost. Some companies (very few) may have contracts still running from last year and are able to still provide free boilers but i don't know what companies if any.
The best thing is to wait and see what the results of the assessment are.
If you paying for it your self, budget boiler i would recommend ferolli premium boiler i would recommend vaillant or glow worm in the middle. Every one in the industry has there opinion on what it best, so it will be different every person you ask that is just my opinion.
I put ferolli in my own BTLs.
All new boilers are condensing, if you don't want condensing you'll be looking at second hand which i wouldn't recommend."talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish" - Euripides0 -
I qualify through tax credits and low income and after looking through this thread I applied via online to SSE last month. I have heard nothing from them.
I then applied last week (online again) to the other suppliers listed on MSE - EDF, EON and NPower.
I got a call back the next day from EON to say I didn't qualify as my boiler is not broken (it's not but is probably inefficient as it's from the 1970's).
It it actually worth me chasing EDF and NPower?
I hesitate as there doesn't seem to be much success noted on this thread and I've had enough of waiting on the phone on hold in the last few months that I don't think I can face any more.
If there are no free boilers available shouldn't MSE remove the part of the website that gives false hope that there is?0 -
Thanks cptn, very helpful.
ND, cpth give regular advice here as the situation changes, read back some more post to find link to reg installers, you Dont need to use the big 6!0 -

MSE advice on this scheme (HHCRO/affordable warmth) has been bad from the outset.
This is not a 'free' boiler scheme, it is a scheme that helps pay towards the capital costs of making energy efficient improvements in some circumstances this may cover the full cost of the boiler.
The amount of money allocated to each individual measure in each individual house is calculated by carrying out an assessment on how much energy is going to be saved by installing that measure in that house.
This obviously mean, it is different in every house.
The energy companies are then obligated to pay an amount per unit of energy saved, this is traded publically on the 'eco brokerage' and this price per unit fluctuates.
This price, for a number of different reasons is very low at the moment and is unlikely to rise until next year.
So as you can see depending on the individual house and the current price per unit being paid will depend how much you get towards your new boiler.
The scheme is still running (hence why MSE advice is still on here), so you can still get a HHCRO grant towards the cost of a new boiler but unless you have a massive house with huge heat loss you are not going to get a free boiler today because the current price per unit is very low.
It is currently around 5-6p for HHCRO it needs to double to pay for a free boiler in most houses.
So my advice would be, if you are desperate keep chasing a company to do this but be aware its only likely to cover say half the cost of the new boiler.
Where as if its not so urgent wait for ECO2 to start early next year which should see an increase in the price per unit being paid.
What ever you choose to do I would advice going to a smaller local green deal installers rather than the big six. These can be found by searching the green deal participants register.
Hope it helps...
(also a few people have DM me asking for advice and saying I have contradicted my self a several times through out this thread. Everything I have said at the time of saving it has been correct but the government have changed the goalposts several times and I am guessing will continue to do so)"talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish" - Euripides0 -

Hi im not sure where we stand legally or who to ask we had a free boiler installed in November 2013 however the owner of the property has now decided he wants to sell the house. will we be entitled to claim another one at our new home when we have only had ours for 10 months.0

Yes you would, in theory you can move house every week and claim a new boiler in every house providing the occupant and the property meet the criteria. There are landlords, who have paid tenants to do this."talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish" - Euripides0 -
Hi. I'm confused.
Since I became unable to work some years ago I've been on IB/ESA (support group) continually so I'm told my ESA is contribution based. However, https://www.entitledto.co.uk indicates I should be on income related ESA. I'm not sure how it worked that out.
Contribution based ESA is limited to one year so surely that means I shouldn't be on it anyway as I've been claiming continuously for many years?
As I understand it the free boiler scheme would only apply if I was on Income Related ESA?
Which type of ESA should I be on?
Why would the type of ESA be a factor in eligibility for the scheme anyway? I mean why should those on contribution based ESA not be eligible?0 -
A good friend of mine is a single mum of two, and although works what she can, does qualify for a boiler replacement.
Well she DID! everything was in place, all the parts were ordered, the boiler was about to be installed it had all been approved, then she had a visit a couple of days before. I am not sure who off - I will have to ask her but they told her there is actually nothing wrong with her boiler and she can no longer have the new one.
She said the company who were going to fit the boiler were hacked off as they said they now had all the parts and a boiler just sitting around.
Her current boiler is old. Must be over 10 years at a guess. It periodically goes out for no reason, and does not efficiently heat the house or water very well. I.e she would not be able to take a shower and has to run the bath really slowly.
Anyone know why whoever this person was who turned up at her house put a spanner in the works.
She is now very worried, as she has a 1 year old and a 3 year old, and worries if we have a cold winter.0 -
Sorry aggypanthus.
Not sure why my post annoyed you. Just trying to help this lady. I know SSAFA help the families of armed services in all sorts of ways. If such an innocent suggestion results in a response like this i won't bother posting again.0
