The knack is not to sell phones abroad (Royal Mail don't cover them anymore I believe anyway)....you can take care of that in your listings.

Bank transfer or postal order would be great but not many sensible buyers would opt for that.

Cheques are also risky as they can be reversed months later.

As I said at the start Paypal with immediate payment (to a confirmed address) although not perfect would be my method of choice of payment both as a buyer or seller.

Dave you are pushing it a bit with your advice and although I would tend to agree with a lot you say from an EBay perspective you are wrong.

As I also stated if you are worried as a seller then Amazon does offer a bit more protection, alternatively you could sell it via local press.

But folk sell on EBay to reach a bigger potential market and therby hopefully get a better price.

All potential sales channels have there own positives and negatives re risk and reward, if you choose EBay you really need to stick to their rules.

Dave, you ignored this the last time I posted it, so here it is again.

I'm afraid having an address is not a magic wand which will make all your problems go away.

    What if:

    - It's a PO box?
    - It's on the opposite end of the country and gosh, seller isn't replying to your letters? Are you really going to go to court over a few quid?
    - It's not the residence of the seller, and the resident can't or won't supply the seller's address?
    - It's an office address and no-one of that name works there?
    - Your seller is overseas?

At least when things go wrong with paypal and ebay you have the chance of help from both paypal AND ebay AND your credit card provider.

Pay with a cheque and you can kiss goodbye to £15 in the event of a dispute and ebay is your single assistant... oh, except that having their address will make it sooooo much easier to get your money back. (Silly me)

Get the proper address from the PO.
    - It's on the opposite end of the country and gosh, seller isn't replying to your letters? Are you really going to go to court over a few quid?

Unlikely, but then do all credit cards allow chargebacks for small amounts?
    - It's not the residence of the seller, and the resident can't or won't supply the seller's address?

The prospect of getting a CCJ might refresh their memory.
    - It's an office address and no-one of that name works there?

    See above.
    - Your seller is overseas?

You're stuffed, as you would be with paypal, WU etc.

What is more likely, a scammer using a payment method where only a hotmail address is needed, or one where an real address is needed?
    The money, Dave...

Well it is. If the OP sends via special delivery to a UK address.
And ignores the possibilty of they're buyer filing an item not as described dispute and sending them back a brick via special delivery ;+)
But if we all thought like that we'd never walk out of the door for fear of being run over by a bus... let alone selling anything on ebay.
OP just follow the advise given and sure you'll be fine i.e.
    Ship only to UK.
Ship only to comfirmed addresses i.e those that show you have seller protection.
Sell on buy it now, paypal only, immediate payment required.
Have a quick nosey at your buyers feedback and what they've purchased recently.
Check completed listings to establish what the ebay market value is for your phone and list it as competitively as you wish.
List on a 10 day auction - with your own photos (not stock photos) - and make sure your paypal account is verified and linked to your ebay account so buyers can see the £500 buyer protection logo on your listing.

...who are just going to hand the details over to anyone, right? Wrong!
Unlikely, but then do all credit cards allow chargebacks for small amounts?

Get one that does. You want everything in life handed to you on a plate?

Good luck serving a CCJ to someone who doesn't live there.
You're stuffed, as you would be with paypal, WU etc.

At least paypal+credit card would have given you two chances to get a refund (dispute + CC). Cheque=yes, you're stuffed.

Who knows? Do get back to me when you have some statistics. In the meantime I'll continue to protect myself by paying the safe way. I expect you'll continue to pay by cheque and expect refunds to fall in your lap.

LOL GREENEYE... ...i'm not after making a quick buck, just that i have a drawer full of unused mobiles
  • now there's something you didn't mention, they're all used mobiles and i presume many of them must be quite old.

in that case you wont get too many nigerians after you, but just take the usual precautions, don't offer to sell abroad, only send to confirmed paypal addresses, send via a trackable method, and you'll have paypal protection on your side.
