Oh right, what ade you choose them as opposed to a high street building soc / bank savings account?
Im intrigued because the advice when you have debts is put your savings onto them, rather then stashing money. But like you I would like to have a savings for all the annual things, particularly car related stuff that all falls at the same time of year.

Hope your exDH doesnt put a spanner in the works for you. Was it an amicable split?
TBH we didn't have much contact once we split... I think I saw him two or three times and that was it..... I moved back with my Dad, about an hours drive from where we lived, so there was very little chance of bumping in to him..... but there was no fighting over assets.... the house was his before we married, so I didn't stake any claim (altho legally I could have!) and I came away with a couple of grand.... blew that pretty quickkly tho, and don't even know what on!
My debts were run up after we split, I got a loan to sort a deposit for moving in with OH, and to buy a car, and pay off the last of OH's debts (stupid me!) We then proceeded to spend nearly £5k on stuff for the house and general reckless spends..... hence the £10k!

I know what ur saying about saving is right, I should really put all the money towards the debts... but my theory was that if I saved every month, a) I would be starting on the right road for when I was debt free and b) I won't be getting into more debt to buy present/insurance etc. Also with the present buying, it would almost force me to look for better value present - which I did Xmas just gone and it was GREAT fun!
And besides, I put all my Olympic Challenge money from last year towards the CCs, so now I just have the loan, which ends in Oct anyway, and it wouldn't make any difference if I tried to pay it off early.... and I refuse to put any of my hard earned money towards OHs CCs..... I know that sounds really harsh, but the circumstances that he spent the money in have determined that! If it was just from overspending/poor budgetting, I would help him, as he is really starting to change his ways.....

I chose Icesave because it had the best interest rate at the time (and is still very competitive), is an online account, and is instant access. I know really I should have got an ISA, but because money would be going in and out all the t ime, the ISA 'rules' just weren't flexible for what I needed - the acc started as my CC savings acc, as my CC debt was all at 0%. Once my loan is paid off, I will get an ISA and start saving properly for a house deposit and our eventual wedding.

I don't blame you at all for wanting to make him pay it off himself - if you were to bail him out, he'd never learn to change his habits.
That's why I refuse to allow an IVA for my father - he will pay it all back.

  • It hard, because sometimes I feel so mean, but then I think exactly as u have just said.... If I bail him out, he won't have to 'suffer' having no money for months on end, and will not learn his lesson. I think the best thing I ever did with him is to stop nagging him, and to start refusing him any money.... then he realsied I was serious! After all, I worked my butt off to pay my cards (eBay/Amazon/scrimping and savings) so why should he have an easy ride!?!

  • I'm just about to start doing them now - as soon as I can get DS to go down for his nap! He has learned to stand up at the side of the cot and rattle it and shout at me! Normally I would let him do it til he fell asleep, but OH is trying to sleep in the next room as he has the night shift again tonight!

Ah bless him, better not upset the OH if hes anything like mine when he is waken up.

I am getting lonely on the ebay side as there is only one other item selling apart from mine with the olympic code on it.
