Hi, we have a small two-up two-down cottage. I normaly clean windows myself, but with the summer here I responded to a note through the door and asked a local guy to come and do them.
He has now given me a bill for six visits to clean them, evne though I have only asked him to do them once! Not repeatedly.

Am I obliged to pay him, even though I requested a one-off service not repeated?
It's only £6 per visit, but I would never have asked him to come so often for such a small job...

You are going to need to confront him and clear it up. If you are sure of what you asked for I would only pay for one. How often does he claim to have cleaned them to have already done them 6 times?

It seems more and more window cleaners are trying this trick to get phantom visits paid for, mine did as well, and I know of 2 or 3 other people its happened to as well.

It's a stupid bit of dishonesty, people tend to pay, tell their neighbours, and then never use the window cleaner again.

I live in a cottage and pay £5 for 6 windows and 2 doors. He comes every 4 months (approx) and uses ladders. Its a small town and we have little choice,so he does what he wants!!

However, he is a really nice bloke and does a good job.

Blimey, it must be cheaper here up north!

I pay £3.30 for 2 bay windows, 6 small windows, 1 patio door and one back door. Comes every 2 weeks.

He uses a long pole with purified water or whatever it is...
  • I pay £20 but the windows are only cleaned every other month. That's for a 3 bed detached with a conservatory.

If you were thinking of changing window cleaners or not bothering just say you can't afford the increase. Our cleaner is fine if we say to skip a month.

Crikey it really is cheaper to live in the North!
We are in Ayrshire, and pay £3 for 6 large windows and one small (above the door). WC comes monthly, and uses good old bucket and sponges. I sacked the last lot as they were using the poles and the windows were left filthy!

£10 for seven windows and a back door. We're in the south east.

Our wc charges us £5.50, a semi in Yorkshire with 2 large windows at the front, window on front door, window on side door, landing window, & 3 windows at the back (1 quite large). He usually comes to do them once a month. Old fashioned ladder & bucket job too.

I can guarantee that it will pee down once he's been, which is usually most of the time!! I've even known said wc to clean the windows in the rain before now!!!!!!

My hubby says it's pointless paying for the windows to be done. Although I guess they do still have a living to earn come rain or shine............He's always been polite & friendly though, so can't knock him for that. Never demands the money when he comes to collect & if I haven't any money on me he calls back when it's conveinient for me.

We're in a 2 bed end terrace with 6 windows + patio doors, and ours has just put it up to £6.50 a month........ he's regular as clockwork and is nice and tall (so he can undo the bolt on the side gate - so he always do all the windows). He also now does gas and electric stuff (just got his qualifications) and he's a part-time fireman. he always puts a card thru when he's been and we can pay him online.

We had 2 prior to him that just were not as good or reliable so we're defo holding on to him (oh and he fixed my sky cable last month when it had all come loose :) )
