Customer Service in UK shops

You are either ignored entirely by the staff as they stand about gossiping, or you are pestered by every staff member in the store from the second you walk in. Why can't there be a middle way where they say hello as you walk in, leave you to browse, and are a visible presence in the shop for you to see and ask questions if needs be?
This is it. I'm not saying I expect them to be stalking me around the shop but to be pretty much oblivious to the customer isn't the way either. Maybe I had no intention of buying anything when I went in but I'm not all that shrewd a shopper and have a bit of spare cash in the bank. I'm sure someone out there could have convinced to part with some of it if they'd have shown a bit of interest.
To be honest I reckon I could have just walked out of the shop with the most expensive TV in the shop without paying considering the level of interest the staff seemed to be showing.0 -
I just think it's funny that MSE users would go to Currys/PC WorldHi. I'm a Board Guide on the Gaming, Consumer Rights, Ebay and Praise/Vent boards. I took my DD's to Scotsdales (Cambridge) yesterday, to get some bits for the garden (we're going back today, as I've decided to give in to my DD's and get a fish tank/some fish), and the staff have the attitude of leaving you to browse, but monitoring customers in certain areas, so that they can come over and be of assistance when needed.
Very few stores get it right, but for those that do, it's brilliant.

Maybe not... on a couple of occasions in Currys in the past I have negotiated them down on price - especially when I told them I can get "this TV and this DVD player for £x online - what can you do for me?"
They do have the ability to discount so it's always worth a try0 -
I think they're damned if they do offer assistance, damned if they don't really, and it's hard to get it spot on sometimes.
I must say staff are always quick to offer assistance in my local PCW (Ashton, Bristol). If I'm just browsing, they ask once then leave me be if I don't need any help.
Currys, which is right next door, it's a bit harder to find someone when you need them.
Maybe in PCW/Currys' case it's branch-dependant?
As mentioned above, they can be good for price/added goodies negotiations, though0 -
I hate when you go into a shop and you find the shop assistants/staff just stood there chatting to each other.. or if you're being served at the counter they're nattering to each other about what they got up to last night before briefly saying 'Thats £xx'.
UK customer service is really poor.0 -

Don't try and stereotype and say the States because that's come up before and service over there can be bad as well as many including myself have confirmed.0 -
One of many reasons I don't go to stores unless I have to. I recently bought a 47" TV from Amazon. Arrived two days later, free postage, works brilliantly and was much cheaper than in the stores. And I knew if there had have been a problem, or I just didn't like it, Amazon would take it back without quibble. What's not to like?0

And Greece. I like the Greeks but they do things at their own speed. Once I had to shake a shopkeeper awake and once conscious all he wanted to do was drink Raki with me out of an old washing up liquid bottle.0
