How babies can be demanding from the day they are born. I thought I was going to get a cute, passive thing that I could cuddle and dress up nicely. Instead I got a baby who displayed his pet lip as soon as he was born. His big eyes seemed to take everything in right from the outset. And, he showed me who was the boss :rotfl:

That poo could be green. That poo could be projectile. That I would ever genuinely interested in another human being's bowel movements...

That no matter how old you are when your kids make you proud you want to tell your own parents, then you realise you can't because they are no longer with you.

That no matter how much they get, it it what you didn't get them/allow them to do is what they remember.

That sleep really is a precious commodity.

That some days a take away, cbeebies or a video is the way to go.

That if you decide to go away in the UK with kids you need treble the amount of money you thought you would.

That in order to produce well rounded adults you need to reign in your parental angst that as teenagers they cannot survive without your immediate input.

That whenever something goes wrong that you have even commented on, never mind advised upon, you will be to blame.

That you will turn into your mother or worse...be even more over protective.

That ultimately, if you have done a good job they will make the right choices, and if they don't first time around, they will eventually get it.

That it is only when you are mature that you understand how selfless you need to be to be a parent, by then it is usually too late to tell your own parents that you see how much they did for you, and why. And it hurts to know that, but that is the way it has always been and they would understand, because they have been there themselves.

That you do eventually come to understand that good parents are priceless, and that the legacy of that is that you try to continue the cycle. Which is the best testament to them that there could ever be.

That milk doesn't come from the breast in a single stream like from a tap, it comes from everywhere in the nipple.

NO ONE tells you to take quadruple the breast pads u think u will need into hospital or u'll be changing your clothes five times a day at least as every time u look at your darling baby your nipples start producing.., gallons at a time. In fact, forget pads.., towels are the thing u need lol. I never ever understood how maternal dehydration wasn't a problem.

That babies can poop so hard it can reach their shoulder blades. I still remember his dad phoning me screaming down the phone that poop had gone all up our son's back and he didn't know what to do. My answer (I hid the laughter from my voice I think) was take lots of wipes and keep wiping til its gone. Then its bathtime. For both of you if necessary.

That if you want an honest opinion then you need to ask your kid.

A few months ago I had a fringe cut in. Everyone said it looked great. Asked my 7 year old if he liked my new hair. He said you look like a Lego man. The fringe was promptly grown out.

I'm normally pretty good at working things out, but it took my eldest child to explain how they did the final scene in the Benedict Cumberbatch Sherlock :shhh:
I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.

One reminded to me by DH - how accurate a 6 month old baby boy could be! Laying on his back, middle of the living room floor, managed to wee on his grandads leg 3 ft away! :rotfl:

How long my dd could talk without taking a breath  I swear she starts the moment she wakes up and doesn't draw breath till the 'night night' at bedtime

How much information I'm supposed to possess because I'm 'mum' anything from minotaurs to why daddy's eye brows grow like that :o

And yes I also check that they are breathing every night before I go to bed :o ds is 12 now but I can't sleep until I've checked :o

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ~ WOO HOO what a ride!
