The job option is obviously the one most of us (and them) would choose, but given the competition from uni students (who are generally available a month earlier and for a month longer) most year 11 leavers don't get lucky.

It's a very long break to fill productively without a lot of cash, which is why I think most of them spend lot of time lolloping around making the place look untidy :o

that is the main issue for us.. we are 15 minutes walk from the university so the teens have no chance.

It's a bit late to be looking for a job or work experience in the middle of June!

He wants a permanent weekend job and realises he is unlikely to get anything to start before September. He was unable to look before as they won't consider anyone before GCSE's are finished. Work experience well if nothing else he can spend a week at his dad's work.

Don't mind spending money on a week away at camp etc as we are not planning a holiday. Would like some recommendations though as concerned that these are normally geared up for younger kids.

He would spend a lot of time 'making music' on his PC which is his main hobby ATM but he has outgrown xbox for some time now.

You've missed out the option of playing XBox until turning virtually nocturnal, emerging from festering pit mid-afternoon to raid the fridge, mess up the kitchen and then crash on the sofa in boxers watching repeats of Top Gear on Dave :D. Or do you have a daughter?

    Love this!!

I have a son who is like this! Don't forget the bit about them going out late afternoon when all their mates are actually awake, up and dressed!!

As we didnt have any younger children to consider we took advantage of an early summer holiday, outside of the school holiday price hike!!!!

Doing this too. Amazing difference in price!

Volunteering could be a good idea. Are there any charity shops near you? Not sure if libraries also take volunteers sometimes. Or do you have a place like this near you that would take your child as a volunteer? http://www.tvap.co.uk./index.php?page=practical_support

Fairly sure St John's Ambulance is free/low cost as well...now there's a productive way of spending your time :)

My daughter will be volunteering 2 days a week, and spending time with friends as they are all going their seperate ways next academic year. Some household duties added in the mix and I think she's sorted! :-)

The yr 11 children in my daughter's school have been offered an NCS course which is £50 for a weeks residential course. She can't do it as she will be away with my parents. She has however done a St John's Ambulance First Aid course so far at no cost (which would have been included in the ncs course).
