    .

Why do you associate with such people?

If you had read my post to the end you'd see where and how I dealt with it. Surprised no-one has threatened me with weights and measures yet...... but I do think the adding a shot is something that is done more to women's drinks from personal observation.

Alcohol is fine to drink every day. Plenty of people drink a beer or a glass of wine every day with no social, health or other problems. You are assuming that all drinkers are problem drinkers, which simply isn't the case.

See to me feeling the need to drink every day IS problem drinking.
It doesn't matter if it's one pint or ten -if you can't do without it - or get uncomfortable if you can't. You have a problem.

Not all people who drink feel the need to drink alcohol every day or consider it an unusual day if they haven't had a drink.

Unless a person has a very unusual intolerence to sugar etc odds are sweets, crisps and chocolate won't make them become violent, driving a car under the influence of Cadburys is not yet a motoring offence under the current statutes, an extra Crunchie "for the road" won't leave the consumer so ill they are unable to get up for work the next day - and a bag of Walkers is unlikely to have you shouting to God down the big white telephone. A few cavities aren't as devestating as liver failure ...........so although healthy eating is important and I don't really understand why you think it should be healthy eating OR responsible drinking -decent parents should be able to manage educating in both ...... overall abuse of alcohol is a lot more likely to kill you than gorging. Yes I know over eating can cause problems but it's a lot harder to hide than alcoholism so is generally addressed -by caring families sooner rather than later.

A glass of wine or beer isn't going to do any of those things to you either.

Most people are able to manage to not become alcohol dependent, most people manage to not damage their health through over indulging in alcohol, just the same as most people manage to eat crisps and chocolate without becoming morbidly obese.

I'm quite surprised that there was nothing provided for the children - a lolly and a cup of squash would cost, what? 20p each...Nothing in the terms of a school's budget.

That said, I'm personally really pleased that the school had beer available and wish more would do the same. The only way we're going to start solving the alcohol issues in this country is by exposing children to people enjoying alcohol responsibly. Having a shandy or glass of pimms whilst watching a bit of sport seems a good place to start to me...

Right as the title..... says my sons school sports day is on Wednesday:) Ive heard via the grapevine... another teacher at the school..... that they will be selling beers at the sports day AGAIN this year...... I'm assuming that this is the leftover stock from the the summer fete they had not to long ago......... now my issue is not the selling of the beers as such altho I'm itching to find out whether they have a liquor licence for the day? anyway long story short the reason I had an issue with the selling of beers last year is that they(the school) did not provide any refreshments, drinks, lollies or anything for the kids, as I can remember it was one of the hottest days of the year too and the poor kids were sweltering in the heat:mad: all the while the head and deputy head were sat under a gazebo selling beers:eek: Personally thought that this was disgusting.
I obviously provided my LO with cold drinks etc but it really made my blood boil that they could sit there selling ALCOHOL of all things and not even a thought for the Kids ........ so I'm just really interested to know what your reaction would be I honestly dont think I'm over reacting but offcourse that is just my opinion!

Wow, I would be appalled if that was my son's school. My sons sports day was last Friday, all children were provided with a sports bottle (which they get in class every day) filled with water, and also an ice pop after the event.

I think I would be speaking to somebody at school, the liquer licence would be the last thing on my mind, the alcohol selling would infuriate me, especially as I see it as the head and deputy heads role to be encouraging the children, not the selling of alcohol.

The head at my sons school played a huge role in co-ordinating the children, and the deupty is my son's teacher so she, along with teaching assistants, did the scoring the Reception.

I am actually disgusted for you!

and some people can use cocaine recreationally and not get hooked - but it doesn't mean we should legalise it.
We;re back to the knife thing again -in the right hands benign - even useful-used incorrectly-very damaging.

He said "Alcohol is fine to drink every day"
    He thinks that is "normal"

  • The spectators could take their own alcohol with them and some have a fag at the side of the activities, so it is besides the point, people think it is acceptable at BBQ's for wine and beers to be served whilst kids are present so I see no difference, but the main issue the OP was pointing out was the fact the school sold that alone with no tea/coffee, water and snacks for the kids or parents not wanting an alcoholic drink!

Check out any city centre on a Friday or Saturday night ....... The kids get tanked up on cheap supermarket booze before going out ....part of this is due to over familiarity with alcohol. On one hand we ban sports advertising by booze companies but on the other from babyhood upwards kids see alcohol displayed prominently every time their parents take them into a supermarket.

I don't remember exactly when drink moved into supermarkets. I'm pretty sure when I was 18 it was only in off licences. I didn't rush out and drink myself senseless -but then my parents had educated me about alcohol at home.I'd be offered a glass of wine with a meal - watered down when I was younger, offered a social drink at family events again a very weak one- so to me alcohol was no big deal. I do remember visiting family in Ireland and thinking how odd it was that children were allowed in pubs .

As for "mystique" did you rush into the nearest bookies on your 18th birthday to place a bet. If not-why not.....Surely by your logic and theory about "mystique" you should have being dying to !!

Hmmm I was born in 1960 -I wonder if they simply didn't routinely have them or if it was just lower key that I didn't notice.

I'm curious as to whether you actually even think about what you're typing before you post. One minute drink's so prominent in supermarkets that children can't help but become alcoholic on their 18th birthday, the next minute you can't even be sure if supermarkets sold alcohol or not...that's how significant it was in your upbringing.

I'm also incredibly curious about this "over familiarity with alcohol" causing people to drink more...what makes you think that? It's just so starkly in contrast with most educated opinion on the matter. Looking around the world, the pattern is clear - the more people are exposed to responsible use of alcohol as they grow up (as in your post), the more responsible they are with alcohol as adults. The more alcohol is prohibited or controlled, the more issues there are with it.

But then what do I know...I *did* go in for a bet on my 18th birthday... :o
