Why not just fruit juice? Why alcohol?

What sort of schools are these that do this? Never had the likes in my comprehensive must say.

Top OFSTED rated primary in a fairly affluent Midlands suburb. The alcoholic drinks are not compulsory, obviously, but a nice option should you choose. Given that most parents will have taken an afternoon off work to attend the Sports Day, and so will probably be walking home afterwards, why not?

The 'Mums and Dads' race could prove to be quite amusing.;)
  • I didn't think there were so many uptight people on here :/

My parents would quite happily have a beer or glass of wine with a special meal like Sunday roast when I was a kid, mum is partial to a long whisky and lemonade in the evening, and dad liked a tot of rum before bed.

I'm not a raging binge drinker...

I think it engenders a much healthier attitude to alcohol for a kid to see their mum or dad enjoy a beer in the sunshine on a special occasion than it does to ban the stuff like it's a deadly poison leading inevitably to projectile vomiting and crime sprees.

Its not about the parents getting drunk at a sports day, its the fact that drink will be availabale at what should be the childs day. The day should be aimed at the children and the childs needs, not pandering to parents who cant go an afternoon without an alcoholic drink.

Its like having a childs party and including what the adults want, whereas I think it should be child friendly.

Theres different kind of parenting though obviously.

There you go again! Why have any refreshments at all if people "can't go all afternoon "without a bun/can of fizz/crisps etc.

This is exactly the reason it shouldn't be sold. There will be a small minority who will see it as a green card to get smashed at their kids sports day, with the school seen to support it.

As a school staff we have had the...do we serve alcohol debate a few times.

Maybe it's down to our catchment but the answer has always been no.

You have parents who'd get smashed at a sports day?

I'd like the choice of water, fruit hjuice, tea, coffee, bottle of beer or glass of wine. Why should my enjoyment of a small glass of red be denied because of a very small percentage who can't control themselves?

Bravo the school for being a bit more mature than most others.

    Yes.

We have plenty who turn up smashed to get their kids too.

It's white lightning central where I work!

    It's your kid's sports day.

Can you not see that for so many kids living with problem drinkers they would like just one place in the world where adults didn't seem to think alcohol was necessary as part of their enjoyment. (And if it's not 'necessary' why have it?) School sports day should be that place. If you wnat to drink anywhere else or anytime else fill your boots but not at a school sports day.
