    What about the mileage?

The milage was around 68000 which is not bad for a car of that age. I've been doing some more research in to the engine and people think that the turbo is the weak point with these cars. Weather this is true or not i don't know?

    You paid £5000 for a 2005 Golf?

Its 8 years old. Expect things to breakdown and need regular replacement parts.

Cars cost money, Not just to buy but to keep them running. When was it serviced last? Next one due soon?

anotherbaldrick thinks VW's are good cars, and therefore that yours can't possibly be as bad as you think.

Forgive me if I've misunderstood, but I think that's it.

It's one of many, many 'weak points'.

People do, as they believe the hype that there's something special about them. They then have all these problems and think they are unlucky (OP mentions his luck in a previous post) and got the 'one off bad one'.

    They're almost all terrible, sorry.

Who recovered your car and took it back to the dealers . If its one the big two breakdown lot . Did they not check it or say anything regarding your turbo if its gone or not .

Close, I think there is no future in imagining all sorts of possible scenario's until you have had a diagnosis from a competent engineer. That, and the strange conduct in finding you had grinding from the brakes and not going straight back but after 3 weeks investigating yourself and finding metal to metal. Not how I would have proceeded but hey-ho.

    Quick update:

Car is with them for the week and they are sending the turbo to a specalist place to get reconditioned/repaired. Should I be entitled to a reciept and garentee in writing from this work once it is complete (in case I have further problems down the line)?

Only issue i am worried about is the ammount of oil that was burnt in the exhaust, and this could of damaged the catalyst. The other issue is that the oil has gone to the cylinders and the high pressure (from added volume) could of bent the rods and affected the compression. Can I ask them to do a compression check after the job is completed to make sure there is no damange to the engine?

Exhaust catalysts do not do anything very useful on diesels so I wouldn't worry about it. You can remove innards of the catalyst completely and it will not affect the diesel MOT emissions test result!

Turbo failure is unfortunately not uncommon on these but I've never heard of it leading to engine damage.
