The OS Doorstep - a helpful and supportive thread in these tough times

fuddle - all the big supermarkets sell thermal mugs, I bought OH a set of two from costco last year that are really good and dont spill, they were so good DD19 "borrowed" the second one and we never see it, so I went back before Christmas to buy two more - one for me and one for when OH invariably leaves his in work
Soup - I have a potato and leek recipe I use which I really like, a general throw in whatever is around type soup (never tastes same twice) and my personal favourite chicken and sweetcorn soup that tastes like chinese restaurant soup - its idiot proof and really quick to do.
I have had to collect OH from work again this evening as little car is still poorly, we called into Costco for some toilet rolls (on offer this week) and then stopped at retail park to look at cat food, wandered into the store I have been viewing online for weeks and found the sofas we have been considering vastly reduced in the sale, so I have finally blown my sofa fund - its been building slowly and surely since we moved and realised these sofas hadnt travelled well and nor were they a good fit for the room(think much too big). I have saved almost to the penny what these cost today including five year cover for accidental (auty) damageThey wont arrive for four months but I figure if I keep saving the same or a little more in the sofa fund I can possibly manage to put new carpet in while room is empty (thinking we may get an offcut reasonably)
I just hope they last as long as these sofas have, which were second hand when we bought them seven years ago, they have moved house three times and the last one took a tremendous toll, we had to strip out DS15 bedroom balcony and even then it was a massive squeeze getting them in.0 -
Does anyone else's veg soup never taste the same twice?
I haven't looked at AF for such a long time. I've got AF envy now :rotfl:
I've a jar of mincemeat to use up so off to look at recipes in the hope of finding something a little different from pies.
I've only one call tonight at 9pm. Then a whole weekend offwe're off to find the The Range to see if there's such a thing as a thermos mug. I'd like a cuppa to last a few hours but can't be pouring a flask of hot stuff over my lap in the car when it's dark.
Fuddle if you want a healthy way to use some mincemeat, core a cooking apple and fill the hole with a couple of tablespoons of mincemeat mixed with a little orange juice and some spices if you like and bake in the oven for about half an hour. Serve with a dollop of yoghourt or cream.0 -
Mince meat is lovely stirred through the mix for Twinks hobnobs I made these as gifts for family at Christmas.I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order

I'm sure my mum used to make mincemeat cake. I have lots to use too but unfortunately only two of us like raisins.
The wind has died down here now, I do hope everyone is OK with this 2nd tidal surge that was predicted.0 -
Wet and windy here.
Still coughing. Still no voice and today managed a few sneezes to add to the mix.:(:(
Sorry, nothing interesting to say at all.

Maybe you need a rest Monnagran?0

I'm coughy coldy too Monnogran, but it got me a very quick exam at the dentist's today and he didn't argue when I turned down having my teeth cleaned (thought I wouldn't be able to breathe!). So there are some benefits. Hope you manage a good rest and feel better tomorrow.0

Its been awful weather all day but tonight its got worse again, wind has built right up and is hammering outside again.
Our mechanic got flooded in this afternoon for a couple of hours, he called and said don't panic I have your car on the ramp on full height setting :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: he joked when I called to check on him later that he knew I would drown him if he drowned my car
I cooked one of the t@sco decorate your own gammon today, and it is absolutely gorgeous, am going to pop back into store tomorrow to see if they have any more .
Pooky - I am refusing to even look at Af until kitchen is done, I will then gain a whole larder cupboard so have some much needed storage space0 -
If you boil soup for five minutes it keeps it fresh. I remember reading that somewhere. There is apparently a pot of stew somewhere that was started 100 years ago and been kept on the hob! The family boils it daily. Kinda freaks me out there might be some really old stuff in there.
Travel mugs are brilliant. We have a bizarre selection because most of our gas stations have promotions where if you buy a large coffee you get the mug for less than a dollar extra. So it almost seems rude not to buy it.
We are heading back into the deep freeze. I'm just glad I have the weekend off.0 -
wondercollie - hope you have a lovely weekend off0
