The oranges/satsuma represent St Nicholas giving gold balls to three sisters (the origin of the Christmas stocking) I've no idea of the origin of any of the others. Though in our house the idea was to keep us kids occupied until the adults rose at a more sensible hour and the whole family went downstairs together.
Ooh, how interesting! Thanks for sharing, Nuatha!0 -

Have just read through today's post so far and was very shocked. Gratuitous nastiness is unacceptable my book.
There is a quote somewhere that 'people seem not to realise that their opinion of the world is a confession of their own character.'
Flowerpetal: I applaud you. Homemade crackers. Wow. It's one of those things that I've always meant to have a go at but never have.
Oh. Welcome, by the way.
My DS2 has just been to mow my grass. It looks much more like a lawn again. I've only been waiting 5 months for him to get round to it!
I don't think I stand a snowball's chance in hell of being ready for Christmas. Apart from family and VERY SPECIAL PEOPLE I have almost cut out presents. The whole thing seems ridiculous when you frantically search for a gift for someone, that you can't really afford and that they usually don't really want, and know that they are doing exactly the same thing for you. The only ones exempt from my rule are the very young and the very old.
This year most will be having flowers of some sort as there won't be time for anything else.
Mar: Celery is scrumptious. Cool and crisp and crunchy. Can't bear it cooked though.
Better get on, I am trying to find the furniture in my breakfast room. It's a start on the great clear up that I'm planning before Christmas.
I know there is a table, 4 chairs, a couple of bookcases and a dresser in there somewhere which I haven't seen for some time.

Do tea towels count as high tech :rotfl: totally practical stuff and handmade only. DGs is getting paints and an easel, patchwork quilt made from his and Ds's shirts. We are contemplating a kindle for Oh as its easier to hold than real books but he can't quite make his mind up so will hang on till next year and try for a bargain but its off all 5 of us. Dgs bought his Grandad a silver sixpence and the seller has labelled the coin holder with 'to my Grandy'.
The kids *cough * adult children love lots of little parcels of silly or useful stuff and Dd's fella never really had Christmas till he moved in with us so he enjoys it even more.
Got the urge to make homemade crackers now but after a marathon cooking session Im doneCooked big ham with mustard and brown sugar crust, fruit loaves (recipe from the thread - thank you ) chicken pot pie, jam tarts and 3 trays of roast potatoes for now and Chrimbo day....phew....

A breakfast room? What's a one of those?!
FlowerPetal welcomeI forgot all about Christmas crackers! I too have the urge to make my own but don't think I can use enough rolls in time. Was about to give up on the idea until I remembered that wrapping paper has sometimes got a car inner tube
I have a few samples (that are supposed to be for my emergency BOB) or I can melt some chocolate into my moulds. It's heart shaped though - can you make a heart Christmassy?
How can I make some mince pies without a 12 tin? Only have a 4 Yorkshire pud tin.0
