  • Forgot to say I love liver but hate preparing it so not had any since DH died. He always did the prep.
And Pops that fruit bowl looks scrumptious!!
Will go and put next load of washing on now. I do try to keep busy but my natural inclination is to sit down.

When I go to Germany to visit ds and the family, my dil [german] always has a whole frozen ox liver for me to make liver and bacon casseroles. One to eat on the day and the rest to freeze so she doesn't have to watch/touch it.Slicing up a whole ox liver takes more time than cooking it, and it's messy! :o
This is one way to fill a morning I suppose. However everyone, including 2 teenage dgk's always eat it, so it's time well spent.Needless to say, I take 4kg of bacon over [along with gravy granules, custard powder and stuffing mix ] in the case. They have to drive to Holland if they want bacon!!
I love liver and bacon, though I prefer pigs or lambs to ox liver, which is soaked in milk for a time before cooking.
Hope this hasn't been tmi for you all :o

    MAR recipe coming up!!!

    Lettuce Soup

1 big lettuce (I use a cos type, I like the taste!) shredded
    4 oz spinach leaves
    1 large leek
    1 lb frozen peas
    2 os of butter
    2 pints of chicken stock
salt and fresh ground black pepper

croutons and creme fraiche/sour cream/cream to finish

Shred all the veg and melt the butter in the bottom of a big saucepan. Add in all the veg and soften gently over a low heat for 10 minutes. Add in the stock and some seasoning and bring up to the simmer and cook slowly for 15 minutes or so. Blitz in a liquidizer/blender and then stir in as much cream or whatever you're using as you like. adjust the seasoning and serve with a dollop of cream or other and some croutons.

Try it and see if you like it, it's not a strong flavour but nice, Cheers Lyn xxx.

He Who Knows has just come back from the lottie and asked the potato question and he doesn't know of any reason why they shouldn't grow well beside each other. He says the only downside is that rose roots spread quite wide and potatoes need deep digging to harvest them, so you could possibly damage the roses that way, (his first reaction was take out the roses, spuds are more use!!!) Hope that's some use, Lyn xxx.

AOT...so sorry that your day was spoilt by the weathersmiley-sad029.gifIt wasn't v. nice here either, not so good today either...I could have dragged myself out today...not sure where in the North you are but there are Farmer's markets...there was an event at a nature reserve this weekend, a food and craft fair and so on.

I convinced myself I'd be out this weekend and here I am still in bed and can't wake up, I think I'll stay indoors today. The fact that I can do that again and not "Have to" go out means a lot to me, another step in the right direction.

So I may do Whitby on Mon, Richmond on Thurs, next Sat I want the attend the free Proms in the Park in Darlington but now discover there is a day of bands of different kinds(local and from abroad)playing for free in the streets of Durham. Not pop groups.

Can I attend both events that are on the same day(perhaps)but I want to take photo's/video's and I fear the camera will run out of power and I need electric to charge the battery. Two events may be too much even for me.

I think the bands, do it all again on the Sunday so that may solve the problem. I welcome a couple of days to build up energy again.

Plans get changed at short notice.

Now to see how long the fruit lasts in a bowl, either because I eat it quicker or it being in a different room. Date wise most of it has quite a long shelf life. I'm quite pleased with it too AOT:)

The liver I have had was already prepared and I believe partially cooked. Having to do it myself might mean I just say no...I've heard of lettuce soup not tried it...but may start to make soups again...I have loads of recipes.

Actually as you get quite a lot of liver in a ready meal I could probably get a couple of meals out of it and add other items to make it go further...I may away and look up what preparing liver involves...

  • Hello Pops. I'm north of Newcastle and our Farmers Market was two weeks ago while I was busy with a table-top sale at our church.
I like to wander round the markets just looking but usually don't buy much - mind you that takes a lot of restraint on my part.:D
Is the event in Durham based around what used to be the Durham Miners Gala - the Big Meeting in other words? I have fond memories of my brother getting lost in the crowd and my dad being able to find him because of the noise he made. I think he was about 6 - too long ago to want to be accurate.
Off for coffee now - might get crochet hooks out later and try the new grips I got to help my hands.

Yes, it could take some time kittiej:)

AOT, The Durham Miners Gala event is on July 13th. I have never ever seen it and it is under threat due to the cost of organising it, funding help being withdrawn and legal action being taken to try and secure help with illnesses caused by working conditions etc and there is an appeal to raise funds. I may attend as it is historic and time may be running out.

The street bands weekend looks interesting.

    Welcome kittiej

Popped to Mr T's last night and managed a bargain-tastic bread haul - 6 wholemeal sliced loaves marked down to 20p again. Luckily I had some space in the freezer. I might be a Friday night regular.
