Lynn what a great idea.
I used to cut up potatoes and add them to a packet of chicken noodle soup.0 -
Aw thanks grandma and Lyn. Super tips! Thank goodness for estate cars but DH was telling me last night that DH, his two sisters as mam and dad used to go camping in a mini when they were kids.
Will be using your ideas.0 -
Fuddle, don't know how long you are going for but here's what I'd do
Breakfasts
Instant porridge pots
Brioche (Aldi's chocolate one is lush)
Lunches
Sandwiches - maybe with non fridge fillings like jars of paste, tins of tuna mayo, tinned ham, peanut butter or Nutella
Take some home baked cakes, twinks, tea loaf, then fruit or crisps and squash
Dinners
Take something like sausages with you to have with super noodles and tinned corn
Tinned ham with tinned spuds and tinned peas
Pasta and sauce?
A ready cooked chicken from a supermarket with coleslaw and potato salad if you like it (can't stand potato salad myself)
What we used to call "tuna sick" pasta and sweetcorn, mix in a tin of condensed mushroom soup and a tin of tuna
A fry up - bacon, sausage eggs, beans ( needs a bit of juggling but can be done)
Pot noodle - wont kill you to have one occasionally

Fuddle, I cannot for the life of me remember the title of the thread or the name of the lovely woman who asked, but there was a thread sometime in the last year about a woman going to visit an island on a holiday paid for by her children. Food on the island was very expensive as there were no shops and she was restricted to being able to cook with a kettle--there were some really brilliant ideas on there about non-perishables that could be cooked with only hot water, and about pack ups she could make. I'lll try to remember it today. In the meantime some of the ideas I remember were:
Wraps made with pre-flavoured tuna packets and cucumbers (saves you having mayo although with a cool pack you could get cheaper tinned tuna and mayo)
Cous-Cous with different seasoning, dehydrated veg can be added at cooking stage. Can be eaten hot, or cold as a salad.
The stuffed tortellini/ravioli/gnocci packets with a stir in sauce--they sell these cheaply at Aldi.
I can't remember some of the great, economical ideas right now but I'll try to think. Will you have an open fire? Before I left I think I'd try to make up a couple of big chopped salads in lock boxes, a few bars/cakes/biscuits for snacks, and try to have a meal plan in place with most of the prepwork done--i.e. if you're planning to eat something that involves chopping, do it before you go.0 -
Oh also, someone told me (when I went to Glastonbury) that you can get pouches of casseroles, just from the supermarket shelves (not specialised dehydrated things from camping shops). THey are long life and need reheating in a pan - beef stews and so forth. Probably a bit dearer than making it but cheaper than eating out. could be served with couscous.I wanna be in the room where it happens0

Aw excellent, thank you both. I really appreciate it. It's easy when you know how
ill do my list tonight.
We're going for 4 nights. We get firepit included on our pitch (I'm worried about carbon monoxide poisoning and will be taking my detector alarm, I know, I know but ill never change lol) so will be taking some marshmallows for sure.0 -

When I was a Brownie/ Guide we used to make Dampers over an open fire - great fun for the girls and good supervised experience of how to behave around an open fire - easy peasy, just some flour, bit of salt and cold water. Mix up to a stiff dough then shape into a long sausage. You will have already found some long green sticksand OH will have stripped the bark with his trusty fishing knife
(if the sticks are clean this bit not essential!), so wrap the dough around the stick like a twizzler. Hold over the flames and cook till done. They burn normally, but thats the best bit. Take a jar of cheap jam to slather on, I still remember the taste now! Vey messy, very good fun and very nice to eat

When we went camping we had tinned potatoes sliced up with baked beans and some chopped tinned ham or spam. Add a slice or two of bead and butter its very filling and warming. The potatoes can be fried slightly first before adding the beans if you fancy.
Long life yougurts with fresh fruit. and you can add some cereal bits if you want to make it more filling.BSC member 137
