"London is a first class city surrounded by a second class country" shows just how ignorant she is. The northern engineering were at the forefront of the industrial revolution. Because of steel in Sheffield, coal production heavily in Durham and surrounding areas, major ship building on our northern docks and the birth of our railways in the heart of the North East, the great London Town wouldn't be able to trade the way it does, certainly couldn't export/import like it does.0

Thank you fuddle for your kind words. I hope you don't have to spend too much money on making the run etc for alfie. I love his name. Pops would love one of those with a cup of tea. You are just right to treat yourself:)
Meant to ask, earlier. Has anyone read the book by Robert Tressell? It is called "The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists. I got it on Am*zon recently and just finished it last night. Nothing changes eh?Do a little kindness every day.;)0 -
Hello, I wondered if I can join your thread?
I am a long time lurker - probably will mainly still be lurking but maybe I will be brave enough to post a bit more.
I live with my husband, we moved into our house last year after years in a very small flat. So now we have a bit more space, with a garden and can grow veggies etc. Garden still needs a lot of work, as does the house but taking it in stages as we can afford.
Still a lot to learn about the new area, I was off work today and a fish van came around - I had no idea, I was very excited :T
Love reading all your posts and getting lots of tips.0 -
Welcome, Usagi! Pull up a chair and have a cup of tea or glass of lemonade!0

Well said Fuddle, Margaret if you were here I'd happily share my cupcakes:D
I haven't read the book but did hear it as a R4 drama some years ago. As you say...little changes.:( Thankfully there are still some good people around:)
Thanks to Twitter I often coherse with the great and good and have the knack somehow(even if they have many followers)to have them regularly keep in touch.
If local enough I have met or have been told that we will in the future some of them and that includes a local ex radio presenter, a councillor, mayoress and...an MP.
I have more faith in my local politicians/councillors than those who lead the parties at a National level.

I did not see the interview and until recently when she's appeared on Radio 5 on a programme I listen to I had no idea she was as young as she is and was a contestant on the Apprentice.
She's always been invited on to talk about matters usually about sex and children. I thought that was her field of expertease(sp?)and she was much older.
I suspect the media invites her on to get a reaction. It's a bit cooler here at last, bit of a breeze and some cloud cover but they now say next week will be hotter:eek:
I have had a nice simple salad a few minutes ago. Always feel clean inside after having one...may have some fruit later...

Welcome Usagi and let me assure you that any contribution you make will be more than well received. What an exciting time for you. You must be thrilled to have more space to play with. We just love hearing all the little trivialities of peoples' lives so plunge in and make friends.
Accents. When we had been married for a couple of years my exOH said what a pity it was that I'd lost my Hampshire accent. This was a surprise to me as I was unaware I had one. My Mum and Dad had a lovely Southampton accent - old So'ton that is - and when I was talking to one of Dad's old cousins recently it was just like hearing my Dad's voice again. How boring it would be if we all sounded the same, I love regional accents they give such colour to life.
Hope Stiltwalker has a wonderful time. No-one deserves it more. I think we all need something to look forward to.
Fuddle: Now listen to me, my girl. It is mega-horrible being ill in this sort of weather so just you go with the flow. If you're hot have a cool shower and lie down. If you're shivery have a warm shower and lie down. If you're hot have lots of cool drinks and if you're cold have hot, comforting ones. Do what is necessary and REST.If you are not better after the weekend go to the doctor. Are we clear? And tell Amy that if she doesn't sound like herself I'll not be speaking to her. x
I get up early these mornings and go through the house like a dose of salts, water the garden and then that is about it for the day. Unfortunately I am so entranced with the fact that I can hang out washing, go and have a quick chat with my veg (well, it works for P.Charles), come back up the garden and take the dry washing in, that I now have a positive Everest of ironing waiting to be done. No, it's much too hot for ironing.

Pops, the cupcake looks lovely. It made me want one, but not enough to either shut up all of the windows and walk to the shop, or even less appealing, put the oven on. I guess I'll have to make do with my fresh strawberries for puds.;) As for the link, well. I hope I never have to live in the world that Katie Hopkins would like. It sounds pretty bleak to me, and I've truly come to love many regions of the UK--I've felt warmly welcomed, both in the North West and Wales and I wouldn't dream of denigrating the whole population of the "rest" of the UK.
OH is out tonight, so I'm on my own. Leftover black beans for tea so will make myself a quesadilla. There's and avocado if I fancy it. I'm writing recipes into the book for my friend. I've had it for weeks and left it to the last minute. Her party is tomorrow. Have some reading to get through, and will probably treat myself to a nice bath. Maybe even a cheeky glass of wine. I thought about finding something to watch on iplayer while I was writing out recipes, but the poor laptop fan is struggling a bit with the weather I think. Instead I think I'll stay out in the garden.
Plants have been watered and I think I might have a cucumber plant!:T I initially started 3 cucumber and 3 courgette plants. Two of those in the courgette group, and one in the cucumber group sprouted. However, they looked so similar that I thought I must have mixed them up at some point. Now that the courgettes and ready to bloom, I do detect a difference! Hopefully my late start won't completely take me out of the running! Fortunately, the spinach has mostly perked up. I'd say a little less than 1/3 of it didn't survive, but I was going to have to thin it anyway so I'm pleased. I've been shading it and watering it and basically cosseting it. After looking into a few flowers dropping off my chillis, it seems I've been cosseting them too much, so I shall have to scale it back!
Right, I'd better get my tea and get myself back out into the garden. Here's hoping for no neighbourhood parties tonight! I'm tired of being woken in the night!
p.s. Fuddle, I find a little olbas oil, or a bit of peppermint oil in the bottom of the shower really pleasant for times like this. Helps with any aches and any head congestion, plus it can just make you feel a bit better all around. I hope you feel better soon!0 -
Hello everyone and welcome to Usagi.
The forecast for this weekend up here is for cooler, cloudy and even misty weather (possibly). And am very sorry to say I'm looking forward to it. Might even get a couple nights sleep.:j
Re accents. I have (or had) a soft Durham accent but when I went to college in Leeds they thought I was Welsh. :rotfl::rotfl:I suspect its been tempered with a bit of Geordie now after 25 years North of the Tyne.
fuddle - take note of monnagran and follow her wise instructions. Hope you're feeling better soon.
I have not read The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists and had not even heard of it til the recent advert on TV. Will try and get from the library. I like an interesting read.
Have had a phone call from the Tax Office suggesting an amount I might pay monthly til uptodate. Unfortunately it would have left me able to pay rent and council tax and nothing else. So they are going to arrange another call from The Income and Expenditure Team this time.:eek:
