Morning all
The nights here have been so muggy it's draining. Even with the windows open we can't sleep, DD said today "I've been so, so, so hot in my bed all the time, mummy", and that sums it up! The cloud's burning off now, so washing in the WM shortly, but I've done so much this week that there's LOADS of ironing to do - yeuch!
I'm Yorkshire born and bred, but mum has always spoken clearly yet with her accent, I think there's a big difference between an accent and clear diction. My dad was from the Scottish highlands, not far from Glasgow and had a thick accent when we were small, which got watered down with time, although it got really thick again when he was tired/cross/tipsy, and became unintelligible to anyone outside our family! We children sometimes pronounce things slightly like him, and use his phrases (youse yuns, away here, etc) and Gaelic words which drove my mum batty! That BBC reporter mentioned, Steph something, has a lovely accent, doesn't sound stupid at all! I rarely have problems understanding accents, as long as people speak clearly, and it would be boring if we all sounded the same. :rotfl:
We only have one strawberry plant, but have had a few fruit this time, the spuds are looking really good, as are the plums and few tomatoes, brambles on their way and some pumpkins should get big enough for Hallowe'en. DH has been tackling the front garden (bit of an embarrassment compared with the rest of the street!) and we're going to use 2 of the 4 beds for edible things next year. I have spuds in one bed now, and had no trouble, either from slugs or vandals.
Sorry to hear some of you are unwell, fuddle, sunshine and others, take care in the heat and (aimed at fuddle!) get to the dr if you need it!

Oh VJs mum, I don't mean you! I guess you and I might sound fairly similar as I spent most of my time growing up in Essex with London parents. Most people in my village had moved out from London, very few had proper 'Essex' accents. So my accent is really a London (North rather than South). A lot of east Essex (Romford way) people were from the east end, so speak more like Eastenders, where I lived, more came from north London (strange how people moved from different areas of London to different areas of Essex).
I was referring to the rather celeb-driven way of speaking that seems popular now - less an accent more a dialect I guess! Totes emosh, well jell, are you joking me?
Sorry if I offended anyone!Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0 -
Morning all! Hope you all got a good night's sleep. It is a bit cooler here today.
I'm headed out to the garden now to get some chores done and then over to my friends to help her set up for her party. It will be a long day for me, as the party itself is quite long and I'm going early. I tend to turn into a pumpkin after several hours with other people--I'm just a big of an introvert like that, so I suspect I will need lots of recovery time on my own tomorrow.
As for "incentivise" well, I suppose no politician would be caught dead using the word I would consider appropriate for what they're describing--which is generally closer to "bribe" than it is "motivate"
Right, better get a wriggle on.0 -

Morning all, I've walked the boy and 6.45 was wonderfully cool down on the river this morning with a lovely breeze blowing so being out was georgeous. I find cooking a pennance in this heat so I defrosted a pack of sausages last night which got cooked and that's breakfast for the next few days. I also got out a pack of YS sausagemeat so I'm going to make a spaghetti sauce to go over steamed veg 'pasta' strips for a couple of days too and keep hot kitchen time down to a minimum. Funnily enough though, no matter how hot it is, a cuppa still always goes down well with both of us!
My favourite Hampshire local saying is that instead of I'm going to stroke the dog the village locals always say 'Sit him down and I'll smooth him' which I think is lovely, and instead of saying 'he likes it' they say 'he do like it, he really do' which again is lovely. My worse bit of kentish is to say 'Choklit' according to the girls, I'm not aware of doing it though, but I guess our voices make us who we are, yes?
Have as nice a day as you are able to in this heat and remember to use the suncream and drink loads of liquids, Cheers Lyn xxx.0 -

You might, who would know on here?:D
I guess we don't write like we speak - years being a pen-pusher (later key pusher!) made me write quite formally, and I guess I have a fairly neutral way of speaking.
When I met OH (he's from sarf London) I though he had a lovely voice, quite posh - he thought he sounded like a proper sarf Londoner:rotfl:. I guess we don't really know how we sound to others!Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0 -
Morning all. Its a bit cooler here this morning but was very heavy and humid night so once again I slept very little. I was up at five opening windows and veranda doors.:(
pops I shall watch for a wave. I've been big fan of Fred Astaire since was quite young. My parents used to despair of me as would not go out (even to beach) if there was a film of his on.:)
Well I've ironing to catch up on as well so really should get on it as am going to visit a friend I have not seen for a while later today. Hope she cheers me up as have had a depressing week. A close family member (would take long post to explain the relationship exactly) died during the week.:(:(:( She was very ill last year but had seemed to be recovering slowly. I feel so down about it and also because her death has provoked the recurrence of bad feeling and dissension in family members. I don't understand WHY people have to argue and fall out at such a sad time.:eek:Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, Do without.0 -
Listen to this one - this isn't exactly my accent but its the local one round here. Listen in a wee bit, it's really good.

AOT sorry for your loss, such sadness is part of our lives as we grow older, but remember the happy times and the friendship and keep them in your heart, think of them often and fondly and you never really lose them at all. Families are complex and reasons for dissonance are many and varied, I think the angst that comes with family deaths is a lot to do with the fact that people don't know how to act and are stressed because of it, and it is much easier to take insult or umbrage when you're stressed and distressed isn't it? Hope you have a lovely day with your friend and find the sunshine in life again very soon, Cheers Lyn xxx.0

Morning All,
Durham is out as I awoke too late and have taken time getting ready so will arrive in Sedgefield later than planned but earlier than if I had gone to Durham first...if that makes any sense.
Its dull but warm at present but I have some salad rolls, water with me and me camera in case there is anything worth taking photos of. I'm sweltering already. Will take the sun cream, jut in case.
I have to be out on time tomorrow. Miss the early bus and the day is over.
Sorry to hear of your loss AOL and as Mrs L says(easy for me to say)its is something we face a we grow older and you are right many families/relatives do seem to show a side that is unappealing when we need togetherness and support. Humans eh?
I say that because those here long enough know my dear Mum passed away approx a year ago and I had to find my own way through the emotions that caused, I was given much support here and think I came through it better than feared. But you can't have a blueprint/one size fits all model. Some will criticie and say you should be ok within weeks, it takes as long as it takes.
I used to be like that...I was really into my TV and radio so now I guess I am making up for lost time. It helps that we can see so many repeats or play programmes back at times to suit ourselves which in the past we were unable to do.
Right, I better get moving or I'll miss the next bus..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson
