Could someone tell me how to open a PM please? I have one waiting for me. I seem to have to set something up but I do not understand it.

    ....

I click on the Private Messages (PMs) link to the right of where it says Welcome [SpikyHedgehog]. You last visited [Today] at [6.01pm] - on my computer the link shows up in blue. That takes me to the inbox showing all my PMs so I can click on the one I want. Don't remember if I had to do anything else to access them, I'm afraid.

Children and their ideas on suitable Christmas gifts do amuse me. DS2, when he was about 5 or 6 did his own Christmas shopping. Grandad liked gardening so he got a packet of carrot seeds. Nanny liked knitting so she had a ball of wool, (bright orange, as I recall.) Aunty worked in an office so she was presented with a bulldog clip, and me? I had a wedding ring, (from woolworths), presumably because I was married, (which I was at that point), swathed in about 100 yards of sellotape. His wife now buys all his Christmas presents. But I will never forget that Christmas, nearly 40 years ago, and still have a chuckle over it.

I am slowly making my way through the Hairy Dieters recipe book. We really enjoyed their Sticky Chicken this week and I intend trying their Lasagne made with leek instead of pasta sheets, soon.
The Rev is busy doing wonderful things with PowerPoint for the big Remembrance Service she is taking tomorrow. They had a rehearsal this morning in the pouring rain. We have to go specially early as the Scouts are doing a Bacon Butty breakfast in the Village Hall before the service. Well, I like to do my bit in encouraging these young people. It's a great personal sacrifice but I can take it!

There are bumps and bangs going on outside and every so often my study window is lit up with showers of sparkly bits. Beautiful.

Oh you'd have loved DD's presents for Daddy last Christmas Monna - it was the first time she was mobile enough to get herself around a shop and take herself (with her walker) to where she wanted to get to and crucially to stop and pick things up when she wanted to. So I took her to B&M as the best smooth walking surface with the widest aisles round here to select her presents for Daddy and her little brother. She wound up insisting on Elf pajamas for both her and her brother (to be fair they both looked cute as anything on Christmas morning), poor Daddy however was less lucky - he got an ice scraper for the car because "i shie" (it shiney) a Tetley tea mug set for a confirmed coffee drinker - "he lie" (he like) and one of those odd 'desk toy' things consisting of lots of little plastic chairs to pile up without them falling over because "i fu" (it funny). In her wheelchair she is even more mobile this year and she has had another 12 months of practice at stubborn barmyness so Lord alone knows what he is liable to get this year, but it could be fun!!

Made a cute felt advent calendar from a cheap kit from the Works this evening which I am quite impressed with - beginning to a feel a bit Christmassy here which is worrying as I'm not usually an early Christmas person but maybe DD's Christmas mania is rubbing off on me!.

Hope you all ok - hugs where needed, wanted or appreciated - X

I had a nice long post written and the forum ate it. Or maybe I did something wrong, but it either case, I don't have the energy to do it again!

Nursemaggie, would an old teatowel in the sink help muffle the dripping tap? We had that approach in the bathroom when waiting for a plumber.

Other than that, I'll extend hugs to all (I had written more, but I'm dopey),

Well I have fiddled around for ages and ages and it just will not let me open my message. I was so excited to get one and now I cannot get it to let me open it. I keep asking it to open it and it just says you have to create folders to put it into a folder.

I don't want to put it in a folder I want to open it. What else do you do with mail you open it. I had already done what Spikyhedgehog I want to know how to open it. I keep clicking on open mail but nothing happens.

Softstuff I know how you feel I had about 10 goes before mine posted last week. I think mine was a slow connection because I kept losing everything else I went on that night.

Apologies I have managed to open the message. Thanks Cranky40. I recognise the poster she is fairly recent so I should find it OK.

    Good morning one and all

Thanks for all the get well wishes. Still feel a grotbag but its nothing much and I'm fine plodding on. The cough has nearly gone so I am sleeping properly (well apart from an early morning door request from poshcat.) Looking forward to a hot bath this morning. Unfortunately DS10 is sneezing and coughing like a good un now :(

AOT - glad your hand is healing but sorry it is taking its time. Please pace yourself with your sorting and pricing.

Mrs LW - your description of Docky refusing to budge made me smile. Glad you are on the mend but you still need to be sensible and rest - that's an order!

His Lordship is requesting use of the PC to drink his coffee at so will have to finish this later.... part 2 will come later. He is making me a coffee too - 2 hot drinks in as many days, I am being spoilt hee hee.
  • Nursemaggie when I lived in rented accommodation and had a plumbing problem which the landlord didn't respond to (apparently he was on holiday in Romania) I found the most effective method with the management company was to ring them (AGAIN) and tell them at since they had done nothing about it I was now calling an emergency plumber, and would have them invoiced. I had a response and a plumber in under 2 hours! Worth a try?

I have a sneaky 5 mins to say I am so angry on your behalf nursemaggie. Sounds like you need to up the pressure as others have suggested. No new advice but the threat to get your own plumber and contact the local paper could work wonders. I am crossing everything you get results and fast.

DS10 was mucking about with a soft ball indoors last night and managed to hit DH's glass of cola which was next to the PC. PC went off, keyboard defunct. DH not pleased but as luck would have it (you know how everything is broken/breaking in our house!!) he had a spare (see how hoarding can sometimes be helpful :p) and PC was duly fixed. DH is doing so much work at weekends now that it would be disastrous not to have a working computer. I have another proofreading task for DH today from work he did yesterday (cos I don't have enough to do right? :D)

better get to it. take care everyone

  • Morning all,

We did the shop yesterday, so it is off for a mooch in the next town over today. I'm making some lentil and cheddar loaves for tea for the first time and hoping they turn out nicely. They'd better--we're having the second half next week.

Glad to hear you're on the mend Mrs LW, and SQ, I'm pleased you're being looked after a bit! Perhaps your DH would benefit from a strong hint that hot drinks are nice on a more regular basis?

NurseMaggie, just an idea--could you open all of the old e-mails you've already sent and copy and past them into one long document with dates? Then, write a short message at the top saying this is how long you've been trying to get these repairs done and cite that it is the landlord's responsibility to make repairs in a timely manner. Explain that if it isn't done promptly and properly you'll be seeking advice from the council, and give them a time-line, say a total of 14 working days to resolve the problem or compensate you for the issue via a rent reduction. Technically that probably won't count as uninhabitable (we were out of a working bathroom for 4 weeks and THAT didn't count) but it does count as the landlord not maintaining the property in accordance with their contract. Even private tenants have recourse to the council bringing in mediation or a housing inspection officer if the situation is getting bad. Might, perhaps, get them to take notice when they see you have documented each and every single time you've contacted them and have evidence that their response has been inadequate and that you know what your rights are.

Monna, when I was about 7 or 8 I went away to girl scout sleep-away camp for a week, it must have been heavily subsidized as there was no way my parents could have afforded it. Anyway, I got lots of letters from home and one was a card from my brother who must have been 4. It was blank inside, but it had a picture on the front of a rabbit riding a motorcycle and he'd added a unicorn sticker for good measure. He'd written it himself and said, "Hi [FPK] Take a zoom to the moon. I miss you and I am sleeping in your bed." There were, of course, creative spellings and a few backwards letters. I still have it on my desk to this day, because what better life advice do you need than "Take a zoom to the moon" and to know that your little brother misses you so much he commandeered your bed in your absence?

Right, I'm late getting a wash in so I should get moving. Hugs to all who need them.x
