The father contacted the police at about 7pm last night, two and a half hours later.

The Facebook comments were getting a little harsh (as they do) but I just kept wondering if the Mum was Polish (as the little boy is) and she had to wait for her hubby to get home as she may not have been able to speak English, people could be calling her and she could have been living a nightmare.

The police said they were doing checks when they dropped a coat off my DD had lent the little boy.

FPK: The best pet grub we have came across in a long while is ALDI own brand. We use it for our dogs & cats. All of which had horrid results on all the expensive "leading" brands. All ours are completely healthy and our vet even recommended it too at our last vet check.

Thanks Princess! We've decided to switch to Aldi after her first year, as all of my research indicates its probably the best value out there. Maybe not the poshest, but best get what you pay for! While some have suggested there is no need for kitten food, I do feel like it makes sense. So we can't switch to Aldi just yet as they don't do a kitten variety. We've compromised and gone with slightly pricier but much much better quality for her first year--not the one the vet suggested, but much better than the popular brand and about the same cost.

Thought I'd just add--I posted on the pet board and they were very friendly and helpful! We've taken some of their suggestions for her first year's food. I haven't always had the friendliest response outside of OS, so thought I should give the compliment!

Someone was asking about Aldi pet food over on the Good/Bad Buys thread, there's a somewhat challenging person on there atm accusing us all of being Aldi fanboys. Sigh. Given that I'd have gone bankrupt without Aldi to feed me in Germany, perhaps you can forgive me my admiration...!

Posted this on a couple of other threads and think it has its place here too..
(I have made onion, bacon and potato hotpot for some thirty years using a recipe of Jocasta Innes'. It's incredibly tasty but takes ages to cook.)

Well, my experiment in making onion, bacon and potato hotpot in 50 minutes instead of two and a half hours was a success.
I sliced 4 onions in the food processor and fried these in a little oil along with a pack of Mr T's cooking bacon; don't usually use this one but it was all I had in and it did OK. Heron's is much meatier - this is bacon mince.
I sliced up pre-cooked new potatoes from a large tin, (into rounds as best I could) layered the onion/bacon mix and potatoes in a glass casserole dish with pepper (bacon is salty enough) and poured over 2/3 pint of cheese sauce. Gave the dish a good shake to get the sauce through the layers. Baked at 200 deg. C for 30 mins

    Costings: 500g cooking bacon 81p, tin potatoes 14p, 4 onions 35p, 70g cheese 50p, milk 15p, butter/flour 10p with peas on side (25p) Would have fed 4 easily. Total cost £2.10 so just over 50 p a head.
I could have made it cheaper still by using another tin of potatoes and half the amount of bacon.
It was just as tasty as the version made using raw sliced onions and potatoes.

No problems FPK. All of ours have had a reaction to one of the leading brands from time to time. I too laughed when it was suggested, Because your led to believe that cheap foods have all of the horrible tail ends, ect. However, I have to say, since mine have been on it, They have amazing coats, are happy, full and have perfect “doo’s” :rotfl:

  • Oh my goodness I've found a yummy thing today that we had for our pudding. I was going to make rhubarb crumble which is in itself a yummy thing but thought I'd have a looksee and find some alternative recipes for rhubarb. This interwebulator is very useful, I made the discovery that you can actually make a rhubarb and CUSTARD crumble, the custard ( I used a ready made tin) goes in on top of the uncooked rhubarb and a bit of sugar along with a few pieces of chopped crystallised ginger and the crumble mix goes on top of the lot. Oh my word it is very nice indeed and can be served with extra custard, who can be uncheered with 2 x custard? I think it will be nice with blackberries, gooseberries, blueberries, apple and cinnamon, all sorts of fruit so I'll be experimenting and hopefully enjoying lots of variations in the weeks to come, Lyn xxx.
