    Well that was wonderfully painless.

Went into branch, applied for a few new 123 accounts, was able to specify no debit card, and they were all opened and added to my online banking with immediate effect.

The adviser wasn't aware of any limit, existing or forthcoming (That's not to say one won't be introduced of course).

It was mentioned that using 123 accounts solely as savings accounts was gently discouraged because Santander can't make any money out of it, but actually the honesty was quite refreshing.

Top marks for customer service :D

That's correct you can specify no debit cards or check books at the time of application.

Have you got enough direct debits for 2 per account?

Yep, don't even have to make up any spurious ones.

As I say, this had been on the cards anyway - this thread was just an incentive to get on and do it.

(I've missed too many good* rates by dithering over the last few years, trying to be quicker off the mark these days.)

*Good in a relative sense. Until FLS was introduced I thought maybe rates might recover. Now I'm pretty convinced they won't any time soon.

I'd been planning to open them anyway (fixed rate elsewhere coming to an end in the next few weeks), just bringing my plans forward slightly.

Still seems crazy that this is now on a par with a new 5 year fix!
Except, of course that Santander123 3% can be withdrawn/reduced in a blink..

Any reason not to just shred the debit cards that come from online applications?

Yes, when you ring up they ask for information from the debit card

    Sooner rather than later methinks.

    Hello

I have one S123 account already, but decided to open up another two online today, after reading this thread.

I do not think base rate interest rates will increase anytime soon, and also believe that Santander will not decrease the 3% rate anytime soon either..

I can always close one down later if I am wrong and interest rates on the current account do fall from 3%,

I hope my applications get accepted before Saturday? At the end of the process it did say it takes 3 working days to open...so not sure...

How do you manage then when opening in branch and you're allowed to not have the debit card, then?
That's correct you can specify no debit cards or check books at the time of application.
